Missing the JEE Advanced cut-off closes one door: IIT and IISc admission this year. It does not close engineering or science. Your JEE Main rank, your Class 12 marks and several other entrance exams still count.
Can I still get into an NIT or IIIT with my JEE Main rank?
Yes. The JoSAA 2026 Business Rules state that admission to NITs, IIEST, IIITs and Other-GFTIs (together called the "NIT+ System") is on the basis of JEE Main, while IITs and IISc use JEE Advanced. According to the JoSAA website, JoSAA 2026 covered admissions to 138 institutes, including 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and 56 Other-GFTIs.
There is one more gate. For NIT+ seats, the same Business Rules require at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your board. Meeting either one is enough. JoSAA publishes board-wise top 20 percentile cut-offs on its site.
Empty NIT+ seats then go to special rounds run by the Central Seat Allocation Board. Timing matters: JoSAA set physical reporting for most NIT+ candidates for August 13-18, 2026, so the 2026 rounds are over. A new cycle needs a fresh JEE Main rank. Our guide to JoSAA rounds, choice filling and documents walks through the process step by step.
Which other entrance exams can I still use?
State engineering exams. Maharashtra's CET Cell ran MHT CET 2026 in PCM and PCB groups, with PCM results out in June 2026. Check your own state's official CET portal.
BITSAT. BITS Pilani's admissions site uses BITSAT for its first-degree B.E., M.Sc. and B.Pharm. programmes.
Private and deemed universities. Many run their own tests. Check the course's approvals and fees before paying a deposit.
One honest warning: by October, many 2026-27 admission cycles have closed; the BITS site says its cycle is over. Treat these as 2027 options and note the registration dates now.
Is a BSc or BS-MS a good option after JEE?
It can be, especially if you liked the physics and maths more than the engineering.
IISERs. IISER Pune states that from 2024 onwards, BS-MS candidates are admitted only through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT), not JEE Advanced. Our explainer on how the IISER Aptitude Test works covers the format.
NEST. The National Entrance Screening Test admits students to the five-year integrated MSc at NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai.
CUET (UG). According to NTA's CUET site, CUET scores are used for undergraduate admission in all Central Universities and in participating state, deemed and private universities.
Should I take a repeat year for JEE Advanced?
First, check that you have an attempt left. The JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility page says a candidate can attempt JEE Advanced "maximum of two times in two consecutive years", and that you must be in the top 2,50,000 of JEE Main. For 2026, you also had to have taken Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026, so a 2025 Class 12 student who sat both years has no attempt left. Read the 2027 brochure when it comes out before you decide.
The same page bars anyone earlier admitted to an IIT. It does not list an NIT seat or a BSc admission as a bar.
A repeat year works best when you can name what went wrong. Use this three-question test:
Was it a gap or a bad day? If your mocks were close to the cut-off all year, a second attempt has a real basis. If they were far below, the gap is bigger.
Can you name three topics that cost you marks? "Everything" means you need a new method, not just more hours.
Is a plan B already in hand? A seat you can join, or a CUET or IAT registration, takes the pressure off.
Worked example. Ananya (not a real student) took CBSE Class 12 for the first time in 2026, scored 82%, and missed the JEE Advanced cut-off. She clears JoSAA's 75% Class 12 rule, so she fills JoSAA choices for NIT+ seats and registers for next year's IAT. Her mocks show most lost marks came from rotational motion and electrostatics, so she revises those on weekends. Having sat JEE Advanced once, she keeps her second attempt open without the whole year riding on it.
If you do repeat, start with the concepts you are actually missing. Fermi's AI tutor works out what you already know and builds a plan for the session, so you sit down to a clear next step. Our guide to supporting a JEE drop year is written for parents.
What if I just feel low about it?
That is normal. If the feeling stays, or affects your sleep, eating or how you see yourself, talk to someone you trust or a professional. Tele MANAS, the government's toll-free mental health helpline, is on 14416 or 1800 891 4416.
