A compartment result feels heavy, but the exam in front of you is one paper, in one subject, on a syllabus you have already studied once. CBSE also publishes almost everything you need. Its question paper page lists the Class 12 compartment papers for 2026 subject by subject. Its marking scheme page carries the marking schemes for both the 2026 main exam and the 2026 Class 12 supplementary exam. (For Class 10, the same page now calls the repeat paper the Second Board Examination.)
Dates, eligibility and forms change every year, so check them on cbse.gov.in. Our explainer on who can appear for CBSE supplementary exams and how the process works covers the rules.
Why do past papers work better than rereading?
In a 2006 experiment by Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke, students who took recall tests on a passage remembered more of it two days and one week later than students who restudied it the same number of times (Psychological Science). The restudying group also felt more confident about how much they would remember. Rereading feels like progress even when it isn't.
A 2013 review of ten study techniques by John Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and spaced practice as high utility, and rated rereading and highlighting as low utility (Psychological Science in the Public Interest). A 2017 meta-analysis by Olusola Adesope and colleagues found that practice tests helped learning more than restudying and every other comparison condition it looked at (Review of Educational Research).
So the plan below runs on closed-book questions checked against official answers.
What does a six-week compartment plan look like?
Week 1: diagnose. On day 1, sit the most recent main exam paper in your subject for the full time allowed, with no notes. On day 2, mark it yourself using the official marking scheme, one question at a time. List every mark you lost in an error log with three columns: chapter, marks lost and reason. Use three reasons: did not know it, used the wrong method, or knew it but left out what the scheme rewards. From day 3, start repairing the chapter that lost the most marks, and keep day 7 light.
Weeks 2 to 4: repair. From Monday to Friday, take one chapter a day in error-log order. Spend about 20 minutes on the NCERT section. Then answer that chapter's past-paper and sample-paper questions closed book, check them against the marking scheme and rewrite every answer that lost marks. On Saturday, sit a full timed paper and mark it the same day. Keep Sunday light.
Week 5: two papers. Sit timed papers on Wednesday and Saturday, and use the days in between to repair what they show.
Week 6: consolidate. Sit your last timed paper on day 1. After that, revise from the error log only: no new chapters, normal sleep and an easy final two days.
CBSE's sample papers and marking schemes for 2025-26 give you more full papers for the weekly slot once you have used up the past ones.
How do you use marking scheme answers?
A marking scheme shows you what earns each mark, which a textbook does not. For every answer you rewrite, check it against the scheme with four questions:
Did I write the formula, definition or keyword the scheme gives a mark for?
Did I show the steps, or jump to the answer?
Are the units, labels and final statement there?
If a diagram was asked for, is it drawn and labelled?
Our guide to using CBSE marking schemes to write answers that earn marks goes subject by subject. If the error log shows wrong methods in numericals, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than just printing an answer. If the log shows chapters you never understood, the Fermi Concept Library gives each concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics its own lesson.
How should you run the weekly timed paper?
Treat it as a rehearsal. Sit it at the same time of day as your real exam. Keep your phone in another room, stick to the full time limit and do not look anything up. Mark it the same day while you still remember your reasoning, and sort the lost marks by reason, not just by total. A shrinking "knew it but left it out" column shows the plan is working.
