Many students juggling school and coaching head home after dark several days a week. The aim is to make that trip boring: the same lit route, the same people, the same check-in, every time.
How do you plan a safe route to coaching?
Walk or ride the route once with a parent in daylight, before your first late class, and note three things.
Light and people. Choose main roads with streetlights, open shops and other people over a quiet shortcut.
Safe stops. Mark two or three places on the way where you could step in and wait: a pharmacy, a petrol pump, a busy restaurant, a police booth.
A backup ride. Know the last bus, metro or shared auto, and have a second option such as a parent pickup.
Wait for your ride at the coaching building, not a dark corner down the road. In a cab, check the number plate matches the app before you get in.
How do you travel with batchmates?
In your first week, find two or three batchmates who live in your direction and agree on a few rules.
Leave together. Nobody walks off alone because the others stayed back with a doubt.
Whoever gets off first messages the group once inside.
The last one home texts too.
Parents can swap numbers with one or two other families in the group, so someone can be reached if a phone dies.
How do you share live location with parents?
Pick one tool and make it a habit.
Google Maps, Android or iPhone. Start navigation home and tap "Share trip progress". The person you choose sees your destination, estimated arrival time and current location, and sharing stops when you arrive or end navigation (Google Maps Help).
Check In on iPhone. Check In in Messages alerts a parent when your iPhone reaches its destination, and if you don't respond to its prompts it can share details such as your location, battery and network signal. It needs iOS 17 or later on both phones (Apple Support).
Safety Check on Android. In Google's Personal Safety app, schedule a check for your trip; you get a 60-second alert, and if you don't respond, emergency sharing sends your contacts your real-time location. If the phone turns off or loses signal, it shares your last known location at the scheduled check-in time (Android Help).
Carry a charged power bank; live sharing only works while the phone is on.
Which emergency numbers should you save?
Save these, and add a parent as an emergency contact on your lock screen.
112 is India's single emergency number. A 2019 government release on its launch says it combines police, fire, health and other helplines (PIB, Ministry of Women and Child Development).
The release says pressing a smartphone's power button three times quickly raises an alert, and the free 112 India app has a SHOUT feature for women and children that alerts registered volunteers nearby.
Both parents, plus one relative or neighbour who lives near your route.
Your coaching centre's front desk.
Tele MANAS, 14416, the government's toll-free, 24x7 mental health line (PIB, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare). If a commute leaves you shaken, talk to them or an adult you trust.
What does a safe late commute look like? A worked example
Say your class ends at 8:30 pm and home is about 25 minutes away by shared auto.
8:25 pm: pack up and message the batchmate group, "Leaving at 8:30."
8:30 pm: start Share trip progress or Check In before you step out.
8:30 to 8:40 pm: wait with the group inside the gate until the auto arrives.
8:55 pm: the first batchmate gets off and texts the group.
9:00 pm: you reach home and sharing stops on its own. Text "Home."
If you are 15 minutes late and not answering, your parent calls you, then a batchmate's family, then the coaching desk.
If plans change, send one line early: "Class is running 20 minutes late. Still with Rohan and Meera. I'll share my trip when we leave."
How do you protect study time on late-class nights?
Late batches eat into sleep and self-study, so plan the week around them with time blocking for students juggling school and coaching. Students in a coaching city can adapt this plan using our guide to studying in a hostel or PG, and families still deciding should weigh commute time when moving cities for coaching or staying home.
Late nights can leave little time for revision. Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session, so that short slot starts with a clear next step.
This week, walk the route once in daylight, save the numbers, and send your first "Home" text.
