Coaching gives you a timetable and a weekly test. You can build both yourself. The plan below assumes school runs from about 7:30 am to 2 pm, six days a week. If your hours are different, move the blocks but keep the shape.
How many hours should a Class 12 student study without coaching?
Start from sleep, not from study hours. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night for teens aged 13 to 17 (CDC), based on a consensus statement from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (Paruthi et al., 2016). If you wake at 6:30, lights go out by 10:30.
After school, travel, meals and sleep, a school day leaves just under five hours of study (4 hours 45 minutes in the plan below): enough, if they are focused and spread out. A review of spacing research that pooled 317 experiments found that study split across separate sessions is remembered better than the same study crammed into one, and that the best gap between sessions grows the longer you need to remember (Cepeda et al., 2006). So short daily sessions beat a weekend marathon.
What does a self-study school day look like?
6:30 to 7:00, warm-up. Close the book and write what you remember from yesterday's slot A. Check it and mark the gaps.
7:30 to 2:00, school. Class notes are your first pass on board topics.
2:00 to 3:30, lunch, rest, travel. No study.
3:30 to 5:00, slot A. The day's hardest subject: new theory, then entrance-level problems.
5:00 to 5:30, break. Go outside or move.
5:30 to 6:45, slot B. Second subject, problems only.
6:45 to 7:45, dinner and family.
7:45 to 8:45, slot C. Board format: school homework, NCERT exercises or one section of a sample paper.
8:45 to 9:15, spaced review. One topic from last week and one from last month, from memory first.
9:15 to 10:30, wind down. Pack your bag, write tomorrow's slot A topic on a sticky note, put screens away.
Rotate subjects so each gets a deep slot at least twice a week. A PCM student might run Physics and Maths on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Chemistry and Maths on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A PCB student swaps Maths for Biology. For splitting syllabus time, see our guide to preparing for boards and JEE together.
Why put a test in every week?
In an experiment by Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke, students who took recall tests on prose passages remembered more two days and one week later than students who restudied the passages instead, even though restudying made them feel more confident (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006).
So Sunday, 9 am to 12 noon, is your test slot. Alternate weeks: one week a full-length entrance-style paper, the next a CBSE sample paper marked against its marking scheme. CBSE publishes Class XII sample question papers and marking schemes for 2026-27 on its academic website. Use a timer and keep your phone in another room.
From 1:30 to 3:00, mark the paper and put every lost mark in one of three bins:
Did not know it: the concept is missing.
Wrong method: you knew the idea but chose the wrong approach.
Slip: arithmetic, units, misreading the question.
For wrong-method mistakes, rework the problem in the Fermi Problem Library, where a step-by-step solver explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer, so you see where you went wrong.
How do you run the weekly review?
Sunday, 5 to 6 pm, with a notebook. Answer five questions in writing:
Which slots did I actually do, and why did I skip the others?
What were my three biggest mark losses today, and which bin were they in?
Which did-not-know topics go into next week's slot A?
Which topics are due for spaced review, one week old and one month old?
Does the timetable itself need fixing?
For a did-not-know gap, read the idea once in your textbook and once in a second explanation, such as its lesson in the Fermi Concept Library, before you try problems again. To decide when each topic comes back, use our spaced revision schedule.
What should change as the boards get close?
Once school finishes the syllabus, slot C becomes full board papers done in parts, and the Sunday test switches to whichever exam comes first. Our Class 12 board revision plan covers the final weeks. Check exam dates only on official CBSE and NTA websites.
If the routine starts to feel unmanageable, or worry is affecting your sleep or eating, talk to a parent, teacher or school counsellor. Tele MANAS, the government's free 24x7 mental-health helpline, is on 14416 or 1800-891-4416 (IIT Kanpur counselling service).
Print the day plan, follow it exactly for one week, and change only what Sunday's review tells you to.
