Class 11 annual exams arrive at an awkward time for anyone in JEE or NEET coaching. The institute is racing ahead through new chapters, and your school wants answers written its own way. You don't need to drop either one. You need to change what you do at home for about six weeks, and stop doing coaching homework for the last two.
Should you pause coaching homework before Class 11 finals?
Yes, briefly and on purpose. Keep going to every coaching class and keep notes, so new chapters don't pile up. What you pause is the homework sheet, for the two weeks before your first paper and through the exam window.
Write every pending sheet on one list with the date it was set, so the pause has an end. Our guide to clearing a chapter backlog after you fall behind shows how to work through that list once the exams are over.
A script for your coaching teacher:
"My school finals start on [date]. Until my last paper on [date] I'll attend every class and keep notes, but I'll do the homework sheets afterwards. Which problems should I not skip?"
If you are a parent, your part is to back this plan when the institute calls, not to add extra tests at home. Our piece on the first year of JEE coaching covers that role in more detail.
What do Class 11 school exams test that coaching doesn't?
Coaching trains you to reach an answer fast. A school paper also marks the steps, the diagram, the units and your practical file.
In the CBSE Physics curriculum for 2026-27, the Class XI theory paper is worth 70 marks over 3 hours, and practicals carry another 30 marks. Of those 30 practical marks, the record is worth 5, the viva 5 and the investigatory project 3, according to the same document. The record must include at least 8 experiments and 6 activities.
No JEE or NEET sheet prepares you for those marks, and they are the easiest to lose by leaving the file to the last week. ICSE, ISC and state boards use different schemes, so ask your teacher for your school's marking plan and chapter list.
How should you use school papers to prepare?
Treat them as tests, not reading material. In a 2006 study, Roediger and Karpicke found that students who took recall tests remembered prose passages better after two days and after one week than students who restudied, even though restudying made them feel more confident.
A 2017 meta-analysis by Adesope and colleagues found that practice tests were more beneficial for learning than restudying and every other comparison condition. A 2013 review by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed (spaced) practice as high utility, and rereading and highlighting as low utility.
For each subject:
Collect last year's school paper and any sample papers your teachers share.
Sit one on paper, in the time your school allows, with your phone in another room.
Mark it against your teacher's marking scheme or the textbook answer and sort every lost mark: didn't know it, knew it but skipped steps or units, or ran out of time.
Revise only the first group from the chapter, then retry those questions three days later.
If a paper shows you used the wrong method, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer. If the gap is an idea rather than a method, the Fermi Concept Library gives each concept its own lesson.
What does a six-week plan look like?
Here is a worked plan for a PCM student with coaching four days a week. Shift it to your own dates.
Weeks 6 and 5: roughly two hours of coaching homework for every hour of school work. The school hour goes to finishing the practical file and NCERT exercises in your weakest subject.
Weeks 4 and 3: split home-study time evenly. Sit one timed school paper per subject each week and mark it the same day.
Weeks 2 and 1: coaching homework paused. Attend class and add sheets to your backlog list. Home time goes to papers, your error list and practice viva questions.
Exam window: before each paper, one short self-test on that subject, then sleep. No coaching homework between papers.
If you don't know where to begin a weak chapter, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session, so you sit down to a clear next step.
Next year the two tracks run together for real; our post on preparing for boards and JEE together covers Class 12.
What if the pressure gets too much?
Some stress before finals is normal. If it stops you sleeping, eating or studying for days, tell a parent, teacher or school counsellor. Tele MANAS, the government's mental-health helpline, answers on 14416 or 1800-891-4416.
Start today by writing your first paper's date at the top of a page and counting back six weeks.
