If your CBSE result page shows a code where your marks should be, the board has not finished your result yet. That is stressful when college forms are due, so find out the cause and who can clear it.
What does “result withheld” mean on a CBSE result?
It means CBSE has not declared your marks yet because something has to be checked or completed first. You may see one of three codes:
RW (Result Withheld): CBSE has used this when part of a student’s assessment is missing. In a 2017 CBSE circular, Class X students marked RW for missing a school-based test were told to apply to their school, which was to conduct the test in July 2017.
RL (Result Later): the result will be declared later. In 2026, a private candidate in Saudi Arabia saw R.L. after three of the five papers were cancelled because of security concerns in the Gulf region, LawBeat reported.
UFM (Unfair Means): under CBSE’s examination bye-laws, the result of a candidate reported for unfair means is not declared and is marked U.F.M. instead.
Why would a board result be withheld?
CBSE’s rules and notices point to four reasons:
An unfair means report. Bye-law 36 lists, among others, having notes relevant to the paper, giving or receiving help, tearing pages from the answer book and taking the answer book out of the hall. Writing your name or any identifying mark in the answer book also counts.
A problem with your exam application. The same bye-law treats a wrong statement or a false document in the application as unfair means, and the result is not declared.
A missing assessment. As in the 2017 RW case, something the school had to conduct or submit is not on record.
A paper that could not be held. For the Gulf cancellations, the Centre notified a policy on 21 June 2026 that, for cancelled subjects, gives 40% weight to Class X theory marks and 60% to Class XII theory marks, according to LawBeat.
How do you find out why your result is withheld?
Check an official site and save proof. For the 2026 Class XII results, CBSE listed cbse.gov.in, results.nic.in, DigiLocker and UMANG in its result notification of 13 May 2026. Take a screenshot that shows your roll number and the code.
Ask your school first. The same notification says school-wise results are sent to schools by email, so your principal or exams in-charge can often see more than you can.
Then write to CBSE. For the July 2026 Class X second-exam results, CBSE asked candidates to email resultcbse2026@cbseshiksha.in or contact their Regional Office or tele-helplines (CBSE press release, 18 July 2026). Regional Offices handle pre- and post-examination arrangements, says the CBSE Citizen’s Charter.
What documents do you need to get it released?
UFM: bye-law 36.3 says that before any penalty you must be given a chance to explain, and you will be asked to appear in person before the Result Committee. If you miss the date, the committee decides without you and that decision is final. If a candidate is found guilty, the rules allow the board to cancel that year’s exam or bar them for up to five years, so go. Bring your admit card, the notice, a short written account and a parent.
Missing assessment or marks: this goes through your school. Bring your admit card and anything showing you took the test or practical, such as your practical file.
Name or date-of-birth errors: the Citizen’s Charter sets out corrections for pass-out candidates: apply to the Regional Office through your school with documents such as the admission form, admission and withdrawal register, transfer certificate or date-of-birth certificate, and allow 60 days after all formalities. If a record mismatch is holding your result, ask whether this route applies.
If nobody replies, lodge a grievance on CPGRAMS with your documents as PDFs; the Citizen’s Charter gives 21 days for a reply, or an interim reply with reasons for the delay.
What should you do while you wait?
Tell colleges or counselling bodies in writing that your board result is pending. If a supplementary exam might follow, read our guide to CBSE supplementary exam rules now. If your marks arrive but look wrong, the steps for CBSE verification and re-evaluation have their own short windows. Parents may find our piece on handling results day as a parent useful too.
If you will need to revise again, Fermi’s AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session, so a long wait does not become a blank page.
Waiting for an unexplained code is hard. If the stress feels like too much, Tele MANAS, the government’s toll-free mental health helpline, is available round the clock on 14416.
