If you like biology, don't mind muddy shoes and want a degree with a clear job title at the end, the Bachelor of Fisheries Science (BFSc) is worth a look. It trains you to breed, feed, protect and process fish and shellfish, and to look after the water they live in.
The sector behind it is large. India is the world's second-largest fish producer with 8% of global output, and its fish production reached 197.75 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, according to a Press Information Bureau release from January 2026. The same release says the sector provides livelihoods to about 3 crore fishers and fish farmers.
What does a BFSc degree actually cover?
ICAR, which coordinates agricultural education in India, sets out what a fisheries college needs. Its Minimum Standards for Higher Agricultural Education in fisheries (2014) lists eight departments, and they map neatly onto what you will study:
Aquaculture: raising fish and shrimp in ponds, tanks and hatcheries
Fisheries Resource Management: wild stocks in rivers, reservoirs and the sea
Fish Harvest and Post-harvest Technology: catching, processing and keeping fish safe to eat
Aquatic Environment Management: water and soil quality
Fish Genetics and Biotechnology
Fish Health Management: diseases and how to prevent them
Fish Nutrition and Feed Technology
Fisheries Extension and Humanities: working with farmers, economics and policy
The same ICAR document asks each college for 20 hectares of instructional farm, and says that in coastal states the ideal site is near the coast, with access to the sea, estuaries, fishing harbours and processing plants. Teaching is in English.
If the chemistry of water quality or the biology of fish reproduction feels shaky from Class 11 and 12, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, so you can patch gaps before first year.
How do you get admission to BFSc after Class 12?
There are two doors; try both.
The national door is CUET (ICAR-UG), conducted by NTA. ICAR's information bulletin for CUET (ICAR-UG) 2026%202026_IB_20260114.pdf) lists BFSc among 13 four-year bachelor's programmes and fills 20% of seats at agricultural universities this way (100% at a few central institutions). The key rules in the bulletin:
Class 12 with at least three of physics, chemistry, maths, biology and agriculture
At least 50% aggregate marks (40% for SC, ST, third gender and PwBD candidates), with no rounding up
At least 16 years old on 31 August 2026
No direct admission through ICAR without qualifying in the exam
Universities may add their own conditions, such as an upper age limit or a required subject
The state door covers the other seats, which each university fills through its own process, often a state entrance test; ICAR says it shares NTA scores with universities that want to use them. Our guides to ICAR admission to agriculture universities and BSc Agriculture admission through state entrance exams explain both routes; BFSc follows the same pattern.
How should a Class 12 PCB student plan for BFSc admission?
Take CUET in the same subjects you passed in Class 12; the bulletin says a mismatch means rejection.
Shortlist four to six colleges: your home state's fisheries or agricultural university, plus a few others for the ICAR quota.
Revise Class 12 biology and chemistry. If you don't know where to start, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session.
After results, register for ICAR's online counselling and, separately, your state's admission process.
What jobs can you get after a BFSc?
Aquaculture and hatcheries: farm manager, hatchery technician, water quality or fish health adviser.
Processing, feed and export: quality control in processing plants, feed companies and export houses. India's seafood exports reached a record Rs 62,408 crore in 2024-25, according to the PIB release.
Government: many state fisheries departments recruit Fisheries Development Officers and similar posts through public service commissions.
As one example, the Assam Public Service Commission advertised 65 Fisheries Development Officer vacancies in February 2025, requiring a BFSc from an ICAR-recognised institution and an age of 21 to 38 years on 1 January 2025 (relaxed for reserved categories), as reported by Scroll. Posts and rules differ by state, so watch your state commission's website.
Research and college teaching usually need further study. ICAR's fisheries standards make the BFSc the entry qualification for a Master of Fisheries Science (MFSc), and BFSc plus MFSc the entry qualification for a PhD.
Is a BFSc the right degree for you?
Ask yourself five questions:
Do you enjoy biology and chemistry practicals?
Are you comfortable with ponds, boats, early mornings and processing floors?
Would you study, and later work, away from a big city?
Do your Class 12 subjects and marks meet the bulletin's rules?
If you want a government job, have you read your state's latest Fisheries Development Officer notice?
If you answered yes to most, put BFSc on your shortlist. Parents weighing options beyond medicine may also find our piece on PCB degrees to consider without NEET useful.
