If you have ruled out an entrance exam, or want a back-up to one, colleges that admit on board marks are a real option. The usual mistakes are a wrongly computed score, a missed payment window or a missing certificate.
Which colleges admit on Class 12 marks without an entrance?
First, rule out the ones that don't. For 2026-27, the University of Delhi's CSAS(UG) bulletin says admission to all its undergraduate programmes is based on CUET (UG) only, and that seat allocation depends solely on CUET scores. If that's your target, read our guide to what CUET UG is and where it fits.
Many state systems run central portals instead:
West Bengal: colleges admit through the centralised portal, wbcap.in, with no entrance exam and merit based on Higher Secondary marks, says Careers360's WBCAP 2026 guide.
Mumbai: colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai admit on Class 12 marks and course-specific criteria, as CareerIndia's report on the 2026 schedule explains.
Tamil Nadu: government arts and science colleges take applications through tngasa.in. Careers360 reported around 181 colleges offering 159 programmes and 1,26,959 seats in 2026-27.
Rules, including how rank lists are drawn up, change every year, so read each college's official prospectus.
How are merit lists and cut-offs calculated?
A merit list ranks applicants by a score worked out from their board marks. A cut-off is just the score of the last student admitted in a category in that round. It isn't announced in advance, and it can drop in later rounds as seats fill.
The key thing is which subjects count. For B.A. honours courses in West Bengal, Careers360 quotes the rule that merit is based on one language and the three best elective subjects.
Here is a worked example with made-up marks. Say you scored English 82, Physics 78, Chemistry 85, Maths 91 and Computer Science 88.
Under a one-language-plus-best-three rule: 82 + 91 + 88 + 85 = 346 out of 400, which is 86.5%.
Averaging all five subjects: 424 out of 500, which is 84.8%.
Some courses also look at one subject on its own: West Bengal's B.A. honours rule says you must have studied and passed the subject you want to take.
Use each college's own rule before comparing yourself with last year's cut-offs.
What documents should you keep ready?
Mumbai's colleges asked for Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, a transfer certificate, ID proof, photos and a category certificate where relevant, CareerIndia reported. West Bengal's list, per Careers360, also includes a school leaving certificate and, where it applies, a migration certificate. Keep a scanned copy and a printout of each:
Class 10 mark sheet (often used as proof of date of birth)
Class 12 mark sheet
Transfer or school leaving certificate
Migration certificate, if you're changing board or state
Caste, EWS, disability or domicile certificate, if you're claiming a reservation
Aadhaar or other photo ID, and passport-size photos
CBSE students, note one change. A CBSE notification of 4 September 2024 says that from the 2025 exams, the Board no longer issues hard copies of migration certificates. You use the digital copy in DigiLocker, which the UGC has told institutions to accept.
What happens after your name appears on a merit list?
You act fast. In Mumbai's 2026 schedule, CareerIndia reported, the first merit list came out on 26 May and document checks and fee payment closed at 3 pm on 29 May. Second and third lists followed on 30 May and 4 June.
If you take a safe seat and move up later, know your refund rights. A University of Calicut order of 14 July 2026 applies the UGC fee refund policy to its affiliated colleges for 2026-27. It sets a full refund for cancellations up to 30 September 2026, and a deduction of no more than Rs 1,000 as a processing fee up to 31 October 2026. Check your own university's refund notice for its dates.
Withdraw in writing, briefly: "I am withdrawing my admission to B.Sc. Physics (application number ...) and request a refund under the UGC fee refund policy. My bank details are attached." Keep the email and receipt.
What should you do, step by step?
Before results: activate DigiLocker and ask your school how to get your transfer certificate.
Results week: work out your merit score under each college's rule and shortlist colleges across a range of cut-offs. If a mark looks wrong, start the CBSE verification and revaluation steps early.
Application window: register on each portal, upload documents and save every confirmation page.
List days: check each list as soon as it's out, with money and documents ready.
Once your seat is confirmed, use the weeks before classes to patch shaky Class 12 topics. The Fermi Concept Library gives every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing its own lesson. Then read what to expect in your first semester at a science college.
