For many Class 11 and 12 students, the school day feels like a mandatory obligation that takes time away from real competitive exam preparation. The temptation to skip school and focus entirely on coaching institutes, mock tests, or self-study is incredibly high. Some families even consider enrolling their children in "dummy schools" where attendance is officially recorded but never enforced. However, ignoring regular school classes often creates more complex problems than it solves, jeopardising both board results and future college admissions.
What is the CBSE 75% attendance rule for Class 12?
You cannot simply choose to stop going to school without facing severe administrative consequences. According to an official circular issued in October 2024, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) strictly requires students to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible to appear for the Class 10 and 12 board examinations (CBSE).
The board calculates this attendance from the start of the academic session up to January 1 of the examination year. While a 25% relaxation exists, it is not a given right. It is only granted in extreme, heavily documented cases such as severe medical emergencies or participation in recognised national sports (CBSE). The board has also issued strict warnings against enrolling in dummy schools, stating that surprise school inspections will lead to the immediate disqualification of students found missing from the attendance registers.
Does skipping school help in JEE preparation?
While skipping classes gives you mathematically more hours in the day, it often leads to severe burnout and social isolation, which is why some JEE aspirants plateau despite studying every day. More importantly, skipping school directly hurts your board exam scores, which are a critical prerequisite for your engineering career.
To secure admission into National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and eventually Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), you must score at least 75% aggregate marks in your Class 12 board exams, or be in the top 20 percentile of your board (NTA JEE Main 2025 Information Bulletin).
Missing school directly impacts your ability to hit this 75% target because of the practical exams. In CBSE Class 12, subjects like Physics and Chemistry are split into a 70-mark theory paper and a 30-mark practical assessment (CBSE Curriculum). These 30 practical marks make up 30% of your total grade in the subject. Because they are assessed internally with an external examiner present, they are generally much easier to score than the challenging 70 theory marks.
However, you cannot perform well in the final practical exam or the viva-voce if you have not attended the weekly lab sessions throughout the year to handle the apparatus, learn the titration calculations, and understand the procedures. Without strong practical marks, reaching an aggregate of 75% across all five subjects becomes mathematically much harder.
How can you balance school and JEE coaching?
Rather than missing school and risking disqualification, the goal is to make your study hours outside of school dramatically more efficient. Families weighing coaching, online classes or self-study for JEE must find a sustainable routine that leaves room for rest, active learning, and physical activity.
Instead of fighting the school schedule, here is a practical plan to balance both responsibilities:
Use school for fundamentals: Treat your regular school classes as your first active pass at the theory. The NCERT textbooks used in school form the exact foundation for the JEE Main syllabus. If you pay attention here, you do not have to learn the concept from scratch at home.
Prioritise practicals: Never skip lab days. Use them to visually understand abstract concepts in physics (like optics and circuits) and chemistry (like chemical kinetics), which helps you remember them for the tricky assertion-reasoning questions in competitive exams.
Fix gaps quickly: If you are struggling with your coaching homework, spending hours staring at a blank page wastes time you could have used to sleep. Instead, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.
Study efficiently: If you did not understand a complex topic in school, do not sit through another two-hour video lecture hoping it makes sense the second time. The Fermi Concept Library contains every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, each with its own lesson and its place in the map.
School provides a structured learning environment, a steady pace, and a crucial social support system during a highly stressful year. By attending regularly and studying smartly at home, you protect your board eligibility while building a robust foundation for your competitive exams.
