Your child has chosen commerce, and the Class 11 form asks one more question: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a different elective. It decides which subjects your child can offer in the university entrance test, and so which degrees stay open.
What does maths in Class 11 commerce open later?
The clearest answer is in admission rules. Delhi University's Bulletin of Information for 2026-27 lists the CUET subjects each programme needs. BA (Hons) Economics, Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), BBA (Financial Investment Analysis) and BA (Hons) Business Economics all require Mathematics or Applied Mathematics in CUET.
The same bulletin states, at the foot of its pages, that candidates must appear in CUET in the subjects they are studying or have passed in Class 12. So a student with neither maths option in Class 12 cannot offer maths in CUET, and those DU programmes are closed to them.
Not everything closes. DU's B.Com (Hons) accepts either Mathematics/Applied Mathematics or Accountancy/Book Keeping, alongside a language and two other subjects, and the B.Com programme does not require maths in CUET, according to the same DU bulletin. Other universities set their own rules, so check each one on your child's list.
Some families drop maths because the plan is chartered accountancy. The ICAI's FAQ on the CA course says students can register for the Foundation course after Class 10 and sit the exam after appearing in Class 12, and it names no required school subject. But one of the four Foundation papers is Quantitative Aptitude, worth 100 marks and covering business mathematics, logical reasoning and statistics. Dropping maths at school does not remove maths from CA.
Mathematics or Applied Mathematics: what is the difference?
CBSE offers two maths electives. It created Applied Mathematics (code 241) because the syllabus meant for science subjects "may not be appropriate for the students who wish to pursue Commerce or Social Science-based subjects", in the words of the CBSE Applied Mathematics curriculum for 2026-27.
In Class 11, each is a three-hour paper of 80 marks plus 20 marks of internal assessment. The topics differ:
Mathematics (041): sets and functions, including trigonometry, 23 marks; algebra 25; coordinate geometry 12; calculus 8; statistics and probability 12, per the CBSE Mathematics curriculum for 2026-27.
Applied Mathematics (241): numbers and numerical applications 10 marks; algebra 18; calculus 12; combinatorics and probability 10; descriptive statistics 10; basics of financial mathematics 15; coordinate geometry 5, per the Applied Mathematics curriculum.
For the DU programmes above, Applied Mathematics counts the same as Mathematics. Science and engineering routes can be a different matter; our explainer on Applied Mathematics in CBSE Class 11 and 12 covers who should pick which.
How much extra work is maths in commerce?
We found no official estimate of study hours, so judge from the syllabus. Maths builds week on week: a gap in algebra makes the next chapter harder. Mathematics (041) brings trigonometric identities, complex numbers and the binomial theorem in Class 11. Applied Mathematics puts more of its marks on money and data.
A fair test is a two-week trial before the school's subject-change deadline:
Ask the school when changes close and whether a student can move between the two maths options.
Have your child do a few problems from the first two chapters each day.
Note where they get stuck: an old Class 10 gap such as algebra or ratios, or the new idea itself.
Decide at the end of the trial, not after the first hard evening.
If the sticking points turn out to be old gaps, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in mathematics, so your child can go back to the exact idea they missed.
Which questions should you ask your child before choosing?
Ask these together, and let your child answer first:
Which two or three degrees interest you today? Let's check whether each needs maths in CUET.
Are economics, management, data or CA on that list? Each brings maths back later.
When maths went badly before, was it one topic or the whole subject?
Would you rather work on money and data problems, or on algebra and trigonometry?
If you drop maths, what will you take instead, and why?
A worked example. Meera wants BA (Hons) Economics at DU but finds algebra slow. Dropping maths would close that programme under the 2026-27 DU bulletin, so Applied Mathematics, with its weight on statistics and financial maths, may be the better fit. Kabir is set on CA through a B.Com. He does not strictly need maths, but the CA Foundation's Quantitative Aptitude paper means two years of school maths could be useful practice rather than a detour.
If you want words to start with, try: "You don't have to love maths to keep it. Let's look at which doors it keeps open, try it for two weeks, and decide together." If your own memories of maths make this conversation tense, our piece on parents' maths anxiety may help.
