If your child passed Class 12 but the marks fall short of what a college or JEE eligibility needs, they do not have to spend another year in a classroom. CBSE’s “Improvement of Performance” route lets a student retake chosen subjects, and the late window for the 2027 exams closes on 30 October 2026.
Can a student repeat Class 12 just to improve marks?
Not as a regular student repeating the year, but yes as a private candidate. CBSE’s notice for private candidates in the 2026-27 Class XII exams says students who passed in 2026 may apply to improve their performance in one or more subjects, as long as they took the same subjects in 2026. Compartment cases use a different category.
Three details from the same notice matter:
The exams are held in February, March and April 2027, alongside the main board exams, on the 2027 syllabus.
Practical, internal assessment or project marks are carried forward, given pro rata, or the practical is held again, as the bye-laws provide.
The student gets a fresh marksheet showing only the improvement marks and does not surrender the original. CBSE prints no aggregate percentage; the notice leaves that to each college’s own norms.
A one-subject route through the school, in the July supplementary exam, is set out in CBSE’s June 2026 supplementary circular, but this year’s exam was already held on 28 July 2026, per the date sheet.
What are the improvement exam dates and fees for 2027?
From the CBSE private candidate notice:
Normal form window: 8 to 23 October 2026. The fee table lists Rs 320 per subject in India, plus a practical fee where relevant.
Late window: 24 to 30 October 2026, with a late fee of Rs 2,000 per candidate on top.
Apply online only, via the CBSE private candidate portal. One application is allowed; the exam city cannot be changed later.
Do improvement marks count for JEE and IIT admission?
For IITs, the JoSAA 2026 business rules (Annexure 2a) ask for at least 75% aggregate in Class 12, or 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates, or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of the student’s board, with physics, chemistry and maths compulsory. The aggregate uses five subjects: physics, chemistry, maths, a language and the best remaining subject.
The same rules say an improving student can retake one or more subjects to reach 75%, or retake all subjects to qualify through the top 20 percentile, which is calculated within a single year. For the 75% route, the rules count the higher of the two attempts in each subject. JoSAA reissues its rules yearly, so check the 2027 version.
A worked example: a student scored 62 in physics, 70 in chemistry, 72 in maths, 80 in English and 78 in computer science. That is 362 out of 500, or 72.4%. Reaching 75% needs 375, so 13 more marks. The CBSE notice lists physics as 70 marks of theory and 30 of practical, so if practical marks are carried forward, all 13 must come from the theory paper: one subject, one clear target.
Should your child retake Class 12 subjects?
Answer these five questions together, honestly:
What exactly needs higher marks? Name the college, scholarship or rule and read its own page. Our guide to which marks count after an improvement exam covers how colleges treat a second marksheet.
How big is the gap? Work it out in marks, as above.
Why were the marks low? A bad day is easier to fix than a subject that never made sense.
What else is on the calendar? The improvement exams fall in the same months as many entrance exams.
What if the marks do not go up? Ask the target college which marksheet it accepts.
If the answers point to yes, keep the plan small: one or two subjects and timed past papers from January. If the trouble is understanding rather than practice, Fermi’s AI tutor can work out what your child already knows and build a plan for the session, so each evening starts with a clear next step. For single chapters, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.
How do you talk about retaking without adding pressure?
One way to open it: “These marks don’t decide who you are. Let’s check whether retaking one subject gets you something you actually want. If it does, we’ll plan it together.” Let your child do the arithmetic. See also how to motivate a child after a bad year and, for another route, whether NIOS suits Class 12 aspirants.
If your child seems persistently low, anxious or withdrawn, talk to a school counsellor or doctor. Tele MANAS, the Health Ministry’s free 24x7 mental-health helpline, is on 14416 (service details).
Your next step: open the CBSE notice with your child tonight and check the subjects, fee and the 30 October deadline together.
