Many engineering aspirants in Maharashtra prepare for JEE Main and MHT CET in the same year. The two exams share subjects but reward different habits. This post sets out MHT CET's pattern from the State CET Cell's official document, compares it with JEE Main, and gives a plan that serves both. Patterns can change, so check the current year's documents on the State CET Cell website before you plan around any number here.
What is the MHT CET exam pattern?
The State CET Cell's syllabus and marking scheme for MHT-CET 2026 lists three papers of multiple-choice questions, each worth 100 marks and lasting 90 minutes:
Paper I, Mathematics: 50 questions (10 from Class 11, 40 from Class 12), 2 marks each.
Paper II, Physics and Chemistry: 50 Physics and 50 Chemistry questions (each 10 from Class 11 and 40 from Class 12), 1 mark each.
Paper III, Biology: 100 questions (20 from Class 11, 80 from Class 12), 1 mark each.
Engineering (PCM group) candidates take Papers I and II. The same document says:
Questions are based on the syllabus of the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Maharashtra.
About 20% weightage goes to Class 11 and 80% to Class 12.
There is no negative marking.
Difficulty is "at par with the JEE (Main)" for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and with NEET for Biology, and questions will be mainly application based.
Which Class 11 chapters does MHT CET include?
The 2026 document limits Class 11 to listed chapters. For PCM students:
Physics: Vectors, Error Analysis, Motion in a plane, Laws of Motion, Gravitation, Thermal properties of matter, Sound, Optics, Electrostatics, Semiconductors.
Chemistry: Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry, Structure of Atom, Chemical Bonding, Redox Reactions, Elements of Group 1 and 2, States of Matter (Gaseous and Liquids), Adsorption and Colloids (Surface Chemistry), Hydrocarbons, Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry, Chemistry in Everyday Life.
Mathematics: Trigonometry II, Straight Line, Circle, Probability, Complex Numbers, Permutations and Combinations, Functions, Limits, Continuity, Conic Section.
All of Class 12 is included.
When is MHT CET held?
Dates change each year. In 2026, the CET Cell's result notification for the PCM group says the "First Attempt" was held from 11 to 20 April 2026 in 16 sessions, and that 4,54,069 of 4,79,332 registered candidates appeared. A separate notice describes a PCB group "Second Attempt" on 10 and 11 May 2026. Read the information brochure for your year to see how many attempts are offered for your group and how scores are used.
How does MHT CET compare with JEE Main?
The JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin from NTA sets Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) as 75 questions for 300 marks in 3 hours: in each of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 numerical-value questions. A correct answer earns 4 marks and a wrong one loses 1, in both sections.
Worked example: time per question.
MHT CET Mathematics: 90 minutes ÷ 50 questions = 1.8 minutes, or 108 seconds, per question
MHT CET Physics and Chemistry: 90 minutes ÷ 100 questions = 0.9 minutes, or 54 seconds, per question
JEE Main: 180 minutes ÷ 75 questions = 2.4 minutes per question
Worked example: what a guess is worth.
JEE Main multiple-choice question, blind guess among four options: (¼ × 4) − (¾ × 1) = 1 − 0.75 = 0.25 marks on average
JEE Main, after ruling out two options: (½ × 4) − (½ × 1) = 2 − 0.5 = 1.5 marks on average
MHT CET, any question: no marks are lost for a wrong answer, so a blank always earns less than a guess
So JEE Main rewards depth and selectivity, while MHT CET, especially in Physics and Chemistry, rewards speed and attempting every question.
How can you prepare for both at once?
Build concepts once. The core of mechanics, electrostatics, chemical bonding and calculus serves both exams. Our guide to taking JEE Main in two sessions covers planning the JEE side.
Use the Maharashtra textbooks for MHT CET coverage. Check each Class 12 chapter in the state syllabus against what you have studied for JEE, and fill any gaps.
Limit Class 11 review to the listed chapters for MHT CET, while keeping the full Class 11 syllabus for JEE.
Add speed drills. In the weeks before MHT CET, do 25 Physics or Chemistry questions in 22 and a half minutes, which matches the 54-second pace.
Mix your practice. In one study, Taylor and Rohrer found that children who practised maths problem types interleaved, rather than blocked, did worse during practice but doubled their scores on a test a day later. Mixed sets train you to choose the method, which both exams demand.
When you get a question wrong and cannot see why, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.
This week, time yourself on 25 mixed Physics and Chemistry questions in 22 and a half minutes, then on 10 JEE-style questions in 24 minutes, and compare your accuracy.
