If you are in Class 11 or 12 in Karnataka, or thinking about engineering colleges there, KCET is likely on your list. Advice about it online mixes up years, rules and rumours. This post sets out what the official KEA bulletin for CET-2026 says about the papers, the syllabus and how engineering ranks are worked out, then turns that into a plan. Rules can change each year, so check the bulletin for your year on the KEA website before you rely on any detail.
Who conducts KCET, and who is it for?
The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) conducts the test. According to the CET-2026 Information Bulletin, it decides eligibility and merit for admission of Karnataka candidates, and wards of Jammu and Kashmir migrants, to the Government share of seats in engineering, technology, farm science, veterinary, nursing, naturopathy and some other courses. Who counts as a "Karnataka candidate" depends on eligibility clauses set out in the bulletin, so read that section carefully.
For medical and dental seats, the same bulletin says merit is based on the NEET-UG All India Rank, not KCET.
What is the KCET exam pattern?
From the CET-2026 bulletin:
The test runs over two days in four sessions: Physics and Chemistry on day one, Mathematics and Biology on day two. In 2026 the dates were 23 and 24 April.
Each paper has 60 multiple-choice questions with four options, one mark each, for 60 marks.
Each paper lasts 80 minutes: the first 10 minutes are for filling in your name, CET number and version code on the OMR sheet, and the next 70 minutes are for answering.
There is no negative marking for wrong answers, but marking more than one answer to a question earns nothing.
Answers are shaded on an OMR sheet with a blue or black ballpoint pen.
Engineering applicants take Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Biology matters for courses such as farm science, and for B-Pharm, where the bulletin uses PCB or PCM marks, whichever is higher.
What syllabus does KCET follow?
The bulletin says questions are based on the First and Second PUC syllabi prescribed by Karnataka's Department of Pre-University Education, and that subject experts reviewed the syllabus for CET-2026. KEA publishes each subject's syllabus separately. The Physics syllabus, for example, is laid out unit by unit for Class XI and XII, starting with Units and Measurements, Kinematics, and Laws of Motion.
If you study in a CBSE or other board school, print the four syllabus PDFs and tick off each unit against your own textbook. Mark any unit your board does not cover so you can fill the gap early.
How is the KCET engineering rank worked out?
This is the rule that surprises most families. For B.E. and B.Tech, the CET-2026 bulletin determines merit "on the basis of marks obtained by candidates in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects in Common Entrance Test-2026 and the marks obtained by candidates in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects in the Qualifying Examination, taken in equal proportions."
For eligibility, the same bulletin requires a pass in 2nd PUC or Class 12 with English, and at least 45% aggregate in Physics and Mathematics along with one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Electronics or Computer Science (40% for SC, ST, Category-1, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B candidates). No minimum mark is set in the CET itself.
Worked example: planning your 70 minutes
You have 70 minutes of answering time for 60 questions.
Average time per question: 70 × 60 ÷ 60 = 70 seconds
First pass, about 45 minutes: answer every question you can do quickly and mark the rest
Second pass, about 20 minutes: return to the marked questions
Last 5 minutes: shade an answer for every question still blank
The last step follows from the marking rule. With no negative marking, a blank earns 0, while a blind guess among four options earns ¼ mark on average. Over 8 blind guesses, that is about 8 × ¼ = 2 marks you would otherwise leave behind. Never shade two circles for one question, since that earns nothing.
The bulletin also suggests printing the specimen OMR sheet from the KEA website and practising shading on photocopies at home. Do it once or twice; it removes one source of stress on the day.
How should you prepare for KCET?
Practice tests work better than rereading. A meta-analysis by Adesope and colleagues (2017) found that practice tests were more beneficial for learning than restudying and all other comparison conditions.
Map the syllabus. Download the four subject syllabus PDFs and tick units as you finish them.
Keep your board preparation central. For engineering, those marks carry equal weight.
From January of Class 12, take one timed 60-question paper a week in 80 minutes on a printed OMR sheet.
Keep an error log. For each wrong answer, note whether you did not know the idea, chose the wrong method or made a slip.
Fix the gaps in your log within the week, before the next paper.
Many Karnataka students also take COMEDK UGET for private engineering colleges; our COMEDK UGET guide explains how it differs. If you are not sure where to begin, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session, so you sit down to a clear next step.
Next step: open the KEA website, download the syllabus for each subject you will take, and tick off the units you have already finished.
