In Class 11, CBSE students who want a computing subject usually face one choice: Computer Science or Informatics Practices. The names sound similar and both use Python, so many families pick by rumour ("CS is harder", "IP is for commerce"). This post compares the two official syllabi for 2026-27, shows a typical question from each, and gives a short way to decide.
Can you take both?
No. The CBSE Senior Secondary scheme of studies for 2026-27 says that out of three Computer Science or IT subjects, Informatics Practices (065), Computer Science (083) and Information Technology (802), a candidate can opt for only one. The same document lists both 065 and 083 with 70 theory and 30 practical marks. It also says Class 11 and 12 are a composite course, so you continue in Class 12 the subjects you take in Class 11.
What does Class 11 Computer Science (083) teach?
From the CS curriculum for 2026-27:
Computer Systems and Organisation (10 marks): hardware, memory, types of software, operating systems, Boolean logic with truth tables and De Morgan's laws, number systems (binary, octal, decimal, hexadecimal) and encoding schemes such as ASCII and Unicode.
Computational Thinking and Programming 1 (45 marks): problem solving, flowcharts, and a full tour of Python: data types, operators, conditions, loops, strings, lists, tuples, dictionaries and the math, random and statistics modules.
Society, Law and Ethics (15 marks): digital footprints, IPR, cyber crime, cyber safety and the IT Act.
In Class 12, CS moves to functions, exception handling, text, binary and CSV files, stacks, computer networks and SQL with Python connectivity.
What does Class 11 Informatics Practices (065) teach?
From the IP curriculum for 2026-27:
Introduction to Computer System (10 marks): components, memory and software.
Introduction to Python (25 marks): basics, control statements, lists, dictionaries and an introduction to NumPy arrays.
Database Concepts and SQL (30 marks): relational model, keys, MySQL, CREATE, ALTER, SELECT with WHERE, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE.
Emerging Trends (5 marks): AI, machine learning, IoT, cloud computing, blockchain and more.
In Class 12, IP moves to Pandas Series and DataFrames, Matplotlib plotting, SQL functions and grouping, networks and societal impacts.
The weightings tell the story. Programming is 45 of 70 theory marks in Class 11 CS. In Class 11 IP, SQL and databases carry 30 marks against Python's 25.
Worked example: one typical task from each
A Class 11 CS task: convert 45 to binary and hexadecimal.
Write 45 as a sum of powers of 2: 45 = 32 + 8 + 4 + 1.
Mark the places 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 with 1 or 0: 1, 0, 1, 1, 0, 1.
So 45 in binary is 101101.
For hexadecimal, divide by 16: 45 = 2 × 16 + 13. The digit for 13 is D, so 45 is 2D.
Check: 2 × 16 + 13 = 45.
A Class 11 IP task, from the suggested practical list: show the roll number, name and marks of students scoring more than 50.
SELECT Rno, Name, Marks FROM Student WHERE Marks > 50;If you enjoyed the first task and found the second dull, CS will probably suit you. If the second felt useful and the first felt pointless, look hard at IP.
How should you decide?
Ask four questions:
Do you enjoy building logic step by step? CS spends more time on algorithms, Boolean logic and number systems.
Do you like working with tables, records and charts? IP builds steadily towards databases, Pandas and plotting.
What are your other subjects? For B.Arch, the JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin quotes a Gazette of India notification of 19 July 2023: Physics and Mathematics are compulsory along with one of a list of subjects that includes Computer Science, Information Technology and Informatics Practices. Check the current year's rules for any course you are aiming at.
What does your school offer? Many schools run only one of the two. Ask before planning.
Neither is a "soft" option. Both have a 30-mark practical with hands-on tests, a practical file and a viva.
For the IP route, you can see what comes next in our posts on NumPy arrays in Class 11 IP and emerging trends in Class 11 IP.
Common mistakes when choosing
Choosing by a friend's choice. The syllabi are public; read them.
Assuming IP has no programming. Python is 25 marks in Class 11 IP and Pandas dominates Class 12.
Assuming CS needs prior coding. The Class 11 course starts from "hello world".
Planning to switch later. The two cannot be taken together, and Class 11 and 12 are one course.
A one-week trial before you decide
Day 1-2: write five short Python programs from the CS suggested list, such as checking for a prime number.
Day 3-4: install MySQL or use a school lab and run five queries from the IP list.
Day 5: convert five numbers to binary and hexadecimal.
Day 6: note which work you would happily do for two years.
If you are still unsure where your strengths lie, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session.
Before the subject form is due, read both curriculum PDFs linked above with a parent and mark the units that interest you.
