Getting into a premier institution like an IIT, NIT or NLU takes years of hard work. The Central Sector Scholarship Scheme of Top Class Education for SC Students ensures that once you earn a seat, money will not stop you from taking it. Run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE), this scheme funds tuition and living expenses for meritorious Scheduled Caste (SC) students at notified premier institutions across India.
If you are planning your finances and looking at Scholarships for science students in India: where to look, here is exactly what the scheme covers, who qualifies, and how to apply.
Who is eligible for the Top Class Education Scheme?
The scheme is specifically designed to support SC students pursuing higher education beyond Class 12. To qualify for a fresh scholarship, you must meet three main conditions:
Category: You must belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.
Income limit: Your total annual family income from all sources must not exceed ₹8.00 lakh (MoSJE).
Admission: You must have secured admission in a full-time course at one of the notified institutions.
Only two siblings from the same family can receive this scholarship. Existing beneficiaries must apply for renewal each year, which requires passing all subjects and staying within the income limit.
What financial benefits does the scholarship cover?
The scholarship is a full-support package that removes the burden of both college fees and daily living costs. Funds are sent directly to the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Tuition fees: The scheme covers full tuition and non-refundable charges for students in government institutions. For students in private sector institutions, tuition fee support is capped at ₹2.00 lakh per annum (MoSJE).
First-year allowance: In your first year, you receive an academic allowance of ₹86,000 (MoSJE). This is broken down into ₹41,000 for living expenses and books, plus a one-time grant of up to ₹45,000 to purchase a reputed brand of computer or laptop along with accessories like a printer or UPS.
Subsequent years: From the second year onwards, the academic allowance is ₹41,000 per year, covering your monthly living expenses (calculated at ₹3,000 per month) and a yearly book allowance of ₹5,000 (MoSJE).
How to check if your college is listed?
Not every college is covered. The scheme applies to around 260 notified premier institutions, including all IITs, NITs, IIMs, AIIMS, and National Law Universities (NLUs) (MoSJE).
