If you are travelling between your home and college, or heading out on an educational tour, paying full fare for every train journey can quickly drain your budget. Indian Railways offers a specific concession for students, significantly cutting the cost of travel in Sleeper and Second Class.
Here is exactly who qualifies for these student concessions, which forms your institution needs to issue, and how to successfully book your discounted ticket at the station.
Who is eligible for the student railway concession?
Indian Railways provides concessions to bonafide students of recognized schools and colleges who are travelling to their hometowns or going on educational tours, according to the official railway concession rules.
General category students receive a 50% discount on the base fare for Second and Sleeper classes. For SC/ST students, the concession is 75% in the same classes. There are also age limits to keep in mind: you must be up to 25 years of age if you are a general category student, or up to 27 years of age if you belong to the SC/ST category. Research scholars have a higher age limit of 35 years.
If you are a daily commuter travelling between your home and school (up to 150 km), Indian Railways also offers Monthly and Quarterly Season Tickets (MST/QST). Boys up to the 12th standard and girls up to graduation can get free Monthly Season Tickets (MST) in Second Class, as outlined in student concession guidelines.
What are the required forms and documents?
You cannot just show your college ID to a ticket examiner and expect a discount. You must apply for the concession before you travel using a specific set of documents.
The Railway Concession Form: This is a standardized certificate issued directly by your educational institution. You cannot print it yourself from the internet.
Official Signatures: The form must be completely filled out with your name, course details, source station, and destination. Most importantly, it must be signed and stamped by the Principal or Head of the Institution.
Student Identity Card: You must carry your original, valid student ID card issued by your school or college, along with a photocopy.
Age and Category Proof: If you are claiming the SC/ST concession or if your age is not clear on your student ID, you will need to present a caste certificate and an age proof (such as an Aadhar card or 10th-grade marksheet).
What is the step-by-step procedure to get the pass?
One of the biggest hurdles students face is assuming they can book these tickets online.
Here is how you book your ticket:
Collect the form: Go to your college administrative office and request the railway concession form.
Get it verified: Fill in your journey details. Ensure the source is the station nearest to your institution and the destination is the station nearest to your home. Have the Principal stamp and sign it.
Visit the PRS counter: Take the verified form and your original student ID to the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter at the railway station.
Book your ticket: Hand over the documents to the booking clerk. They will verify the institutional stamp, calculate the applicable discounted fare, and issue your physical ticket.
You must carry your original student ID card along with this physical ticket during your train journey. If you fail to show your ID to the Ticket Examiner, you will be treated as a passenger travelling without a ticket and charged a penalty.
How can you make the most of your journey?
The money saved from railway concessions can be put towards books, hostel fees, or exam preparation. Long train journeys themselves offer uninterrupted time to revise for upcoming exams.
Instead of carrying heavy textbooks in your luggage, you can study from your phone. If you get stuck on a topic like converting PV, PT and VT graphs of ideal gas processes, you can use Fermi's AI tutor. The tutor does not just print out an answer; it holds a line of reasoning across a session, asks questions to check your understanding, and draws the figures you need to learn. If you are struggling with a tricky physics numerical, such as finding the mass of a metre scale with the principle of moments, the tutor builds a plan to help you work it out step by step.
By planning your ticket bookings in advance and keeping your concession forms ready, you can travel affordably and use the journey to stay ahead in your classes.
