Many families overpack for a coaching city. The suitcase fills with steel utensils, a rolled mattress and a full shelf of reference books, and then the room turns out to have one cupboard and a single study table. A better rule is simple: carry what is hard to replace, and buy what is bulky and easy to find after you have seen the room.
This list is written for Kota but works for any coaching city. If you are still deciding whether to move, read our guide on moving cities for coaching or staying home.
What documents should you carry to Kota?
Paperwork is the one thing you cannot buy there. Keep originals in a waterproof folder, photocopies in a second envelope, and scans on your phone and a parent's phone.
Aadhaar card or another photo ID, plus photocopies
Class 10 marksheet and certificate, and current school papers
A sheet of passport-size photographs
The coaching admission letter and every fee receipt
The hostel or PG agreement and every rent and mess receipt
Phone numbers of parents and a local guardian, also written on paper
A health note: blood group, allergies, regular medicines and prescriptions
Receipts matter. Rajasthan's Coaching Centres (Control and Regulation) Act, 2025 tells each district committee to make sure centres do not charge the full fee at once and give parents the option to pay in at least four equal instalments. If a student who has paid in full leaves within the prescribed period, the committee is to direct a pro-rata refund of the remaining fee within 10 days, and it may also order hostel and mess fees returned for students in the centre's hostel. The Act applies from a date the state notifies, so ask the institute where things stand, and keep the paper trail either way.
Which study things should you pack?
Pack light. Institutes usually hand out their own modules and test papers, so new paper arrives fast.
NCERT textbooks for this year's subjects
Your own notes and error log from school, which you cannot replace
One notebook per subject and basic stationery for week one
A simple wristwatch for timing practice tests
Earphones and a charger with a long cable
Leave the full set of reference books at home, and buy one only when a teacher recommends it for a chapter you are doing. For the odd concept you want to revisit without that book, the Fermi Concept Library has every concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, each with its own lesson.
What should you pack for a Kota hostel room?
Plan clothes for two extremes. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991-2020, as tabulated for Kota, give May a mean daily maximum of 42.6 °C and January a mean daily minimum of 11.2 °C. That means loose cotton clothes for most of the year and one warm layer for winter nights.
Cotton clothes for a week, plus one jacket or sweater and a shawl
Two bedsheets, a pillow cover, a towel and a light blanket
Slippers, and shoes you can walk in daily
A padlock with two keys (give one to your local guardian)
A water bottle, a few hangers and a small mirror
A small first-aid kit and a month's supply of any regular medicines
Once you arrive, our guide to setting up a hostel or PG room for exam prep covers the desk, light and phone.
What should you buy in Kota instead of carrying?
These are bulky, easy to find, and depend on what the room already has. Look first, then buy.
Mattress and pillow, if not supplied
Bucket, mug and laundry bag
Desk lamp and an extension board (check the hostel's appliance rules)
Table fan or cooler, if the room has neither
Toiletries, detergent and mosquito repellent
Stationery refills and files
What should you ask the hostel on the first day?
A parent can use this short script with the warden or owner before unpacking:
Is the mess fee charged monthly or for the whole term?
What is the refund policy if my child leaves midway, and can we have it in writing?
Which appliances are allowed in the room?
Who should my child call at night if they are unwell, and which hospital is nearest?
Which day is the weekly off, and when do the gates close?
Then save these numbers on the student's phone: the warden, the local guardian, the nearest hospital, and Tele MANAS. Tele MANAS, the free mental health helpline launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, answers on 14416 or 1800-891-4416, toll-free and 24x7.
The first month away is often harder than the move. Parents can read our piece on exam stress in teenagers, and when to get help for everyday support and the signs that need a professional.
Print this list, tick it off the week before you leave, and keep the receipts folder at the top of the bag.
