A NEET-UG score below what you hoped for can feel like a closed door. Usually it is not: your score decides which routes are open this year. Here they are, with five questions to choose between them.
What can I still apply for with my NEET score?
The NTA's NEET (UG) 2026 results press release says 11.21 lakh of close to 20 lakh candidates qualified, and 90,780 scored 500 or more out of 720.
Start with one fact: did you qualify? The NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin sets the qualifying mark at the 50th percentile for General and General-EWS candidates and the 40th percentile for SC, ST and OBC candidates, with separate thresholds for candidates with benchmark disabilities.
If you qualified, the bulletin describes several counselling systems:
MCC counselling for the 15% All India Quota and for AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities, ESIC colleges and deemed universities.
State counselling for the remaining government and private college seats, under your state's rules.
AYUSH counselling through AACCC, which allots All India Quota seats in BAMS, BUMS, BSMS and BHMS.
Nursing and veterinary seats. NEET results are also used for B.Sc. (H) Nursing and for BVSc & AH admissions under the 15% Veterinary Council of India quota, and the Military Nursing Service shortlists for its B.Sc Nursing course on NEET scores.
Counselling runs in rounds, so a seat that looks out of reach in round one can still come up later. For 2026, the MCC UG counselling page lists a third round and a stray vacancy round. Our explainer on how NEET counselling rounds work covers each stage.
What if I did not qualify, or want a different path?
CUET (UG), also run by the NTA, is used for undergraduate admission at all central universities and at participating state, deemed and private universities, including BSc courses in subjects such as zoology or chemistry. For allied health courses such as physiotherapy, check each official prospectus: admission rules differ by state and institution.
A BSc does not shut the medical door either: the NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin states that, under current NMC rules, there is no upper age limit for NEET (UG).
Should I repeat NEET next year?
A repeat year works when you know what went wrong and can fix it, not when the plan is "the same, but harder". One data point from the NTA's 2026 results release: over 93 per cent of the 138 candidates who scored above 690 were sitting NEET (UG) for the first time. It does not predict your odds, but a second year is not automatically a better one.
First, audit your mistakes from your recorded responses and last few mocks; our 60-minute review after a bad test shows how. Sort every lost mark into one of three bins:
Concept gaps: you did not know the idea.
Method errors: you knew the idea but set the problem up wrongly.
Exam errors: you misread, ran out of time or filled the wrong bubble.
Say you lost most physics marks in two chapters, most chemistry marks to calculation slips, and some biology to statement questions read too fast. That profile is fixable: relearn the physics, time the chemistry, slow down in biology. If your losses are spread thinly across every chapter and you already studied full days, a repeat needs a different method, not more hours.
For concept gaps, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry and biology. For method errors, the Fermi Problem Library works problems step by step and explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.
How do I choose between a seat, a BSc and a repeat?
Answer these on paper, with a parent if you can:
Did I qualify, and which counselling rounds are still open to me?
If I never studied MBBS, would I be content in this course five years from now?
Can I name, chapter by chapter, why I lost marks?
What does one more year cost my family, in money, health and mood?
What is my backup if the next attempt goes the same way?
If question 2 is a yes, lean towards taking the seat. If question 3 is a clear yes and question 4 is affordable, a repeat is reasonable; applying for CUET (UG) alongside answers question 5. If you are unsure on both, a BSc now keeps more doors open, and NEET stays open later.
To start the talk at home, try: "I've looked at three options. This week I'll check counselling and CUET dates, then decide with you by Sunday." Parents can read our guide to what to say on results day.
If low mood lasts or you feel unsafe, talk to an adult you trust. Tele MANAS, the government's toll-free mental health helpline, connects you to trained counsellors, 24 hours a day, on 14416 or 1800-891-4416.
If you decide to repeat, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for each session, so each day starts with a clear next step.
