In your first semester, one number follows you into every paper: 75. Miss too many classes and you can be stopped from writing the end-semester exam, even if you know the material.
What is the 75 percent attendance rule in college?
The 75% rule means you must attend at least three of every four classes held in a paper or semester to be eligible for its exam. Under the St. Xavier's College, Kolkata rules, a student short of attendance without condonation "will be debarred" from that paper's exam. Each university, college or regulator writes its own version, so your own handbook is the one that matters.
Two real rulebooks show how the details differ. St. Xavier's College, Kolkata requires 75% in each paper and allows condonation only if attendance in that subject is at least 55%. St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, requires 75% aggregate attendance in a semester with a condonation floor of 60% (65% for its integrated law courses), according to its regulations as quoted in a Calcutta High Court judgment of 29 September 2026.
Professional courses add their own regulator. The National Medical Commission's FAQ on its MBBS curriculum guidelines, in force since 1 August 2023, says that if a student's attendance is less than 75% for theory and less than 80% for practical or clinical training, the student cannot sit the supplementary exam and must make up the deficit with the junior batch.
For law, in November 2025 the Delhi High Court said law students should not be barred from exams only for low attendance (Bar & Bench). The Supreme Court stayed that direction on 26 May 2026 (LiveLaw) and reserved its verdict in October 2026 (Bar & Bench).
What counts as medical leave or duty leave?
Condonation means the college formally excuses part of your shortfall for an accepted reason. At St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, the accepted reasons are illness and co-curricular or extra-curricular activities approved by the college, and a condoned student pays a fee.
Medical leave: a leave application plus a medical certificate. The college wants the application within three days of your absence; the university's rules in the Calcutta judgment also ask for the certificate "within 15 days of joining".
Duty leave: for NCC, sports or other college activities, get written approval before you go. The college gives "due consideration" to days spent representing it in NCC and sports.
No guarantee: both rulebooks say a leave application on its own does not ensure condonation.
In the Calcutta case, a student whose attendance the university put at 63.76% had documented illnesses, including chickenpox. Justice Jay Sengupta held that a delay in the leave application or certificate "cannot be treated as fatal" and let her move to the next semester. That was one judgment about one university, so still file on time.
How do you calculate your own attendance?
Don't rely only on the college portal. For each paper, keep two numbers: classes held and classes attended. Then use two formulas:
Classes to attend in a row to get back to 75% = (0.75 x held - attended) / 0.25
Classes you can still miss this semester = attended + classes remaining - 0.75 x total classes planned
Worked example. Your physics paper has 60 classes planned. After 30, you have attended 20, which is 66.7%. To get back to 75%: (22.5 - 20) / 0.25 = 10 classes in a row, after which you are at 30 of 40. Across the semester you need 45 of 60, so you can miss only 5 of the remaining 30 classes.
A five-minute weekly routine:
Every Sunday, update held and attended for each paper.
Treat any paper under 80% as a warning, so one fever does not push you under.
Monthly, compare your count with the official record and raise mismatches in writing.
If a paper is heading below 75%, talk to your mentor before the exam form is due, not after.
What should you do if you have already missed classes?
Missed lectures leave gaps in what you know, not just in a register. Our guide to your first semester at science or engineering college explains how college teaching differs from school, and the semester plan to improve your CGPA shows how to rebuild marks.
To cover the topics you missed, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for each concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing. If you do not know where to start, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session.
If attendance worries are making you anxious or hopeless, talk to someone: a parent, your college counsellor, or Tele MANAS, the government's free 24x7 mental-health helpline, on 14416.
This week, find your college's attendance rule and write down three numbers: the minimum, the condonation floor and the leave deadline. Then start your count.
