Your first board exam will feel familiar on paper and different around it. The questions come from your syllabus; what changes is the place, the people in the room, the rules about time and who reads your answer book. Below is each, from CBSE's 2026 documents. For your year, your admit card and school circulars have the final say.
Where will you write your board exam?
You write at an examination centre, which may be a different school from your own. In its February 2026 advisory, CBSE asked students to visit their centre in advance and plan the journey, because entry closes at a fixed time. Do the trial trip on a weekday morning to see the real traffic.
Your admit card does more than get you in. A CBSE circular to exam centres dated 14 February 2026 told them to hand out only the paper for the subject printed on the admit card, never Mathematics Basic in place of Standard or vice versa. Check the subject codes on your admit card as soon as you get it, and tell your school straight away if one is wrong. The 2026 Class 10 date sheet notes that no communication devices are allowed inside the centre, so leave your phone with a parent or at home.
What is the timing on board exam day?
In 2026 the clock looked like this:
By 10:00 am: CBSE's 2026 advisory said students would be allowed in only until 10:00 am (IST).
10:15 am: the question paper is handed out. CBSE Circular 29/2005, which brought in this reading time, says the 15 minutes until 10:30 are for reading and understanding the paper only. You may not write answers.
10:30 am to 1:30 pm: three hours of writing for main subjects such as Mathematics and Science on the 2026 date sheet. Some skill subjects end at 12:30 pm.
What changes inside the exam hall?
If anything practical goes wrong, such as the wrong subject paper or a blurred page, raise your hand and tell the invigilator.
The answer book has one rule that catches first-timers. CBSE's December 2025 guidance for Class 10 says the Science paper has three sections (A Biology, B Chemistry, C Physics) and Social Science has four (History, Geography, Political Science, Economics). You divide your answer book into the same sections. If answers are mixed across sections, they will not be evaluated, and CBSE says this will not be addressed at verification or revaluation. Practise the split in your pre-boards.
How are board exam answer books marked?
Examiners mark against a marking scheme. The general instructions printed on CBSE's 2025 Class 10 marking schemes (for example, this one for the Rai paper) tell them that:
The scheme gives suggested value points, not the complete answer. If your wording is different but correct, you should get the marks.
In Class 10 competency-based questions, showing the correct competency earns marks even if your reply is not from the scheme.
A mistake carried through later steps is penalised only once.
If you answer an extra question, the answer that deserves more marks is kept.
A head examiner goes through the first five answer books each examiner marks on the first day, to check the marking follows the scheme.
In 2026, Class 12 moved to on-screen marking while Class 10 books were still marked on paper (CBSE circular, 9 February 2026).
So number every answer exactly as in the paper, label parts (a), (b), (c), and write the steps that carry value points. Our guide to using CBSE marking schemes to write answers that earn the marks shows how. If your working tends to skip steps, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning, so you can compare its steps with yours.
A plan for your first board exam morning
Night before: pack the admit card, pens, pencils and geometry box, plus anything else your admit card instructions allow.
Leave so you reach the centre by 9:30, half an hour before entry closes.
10:15 to 10:30: read the whole paper and choose your order.
10:30: in Science and Social Science, mark out each section's pages first.
Last 10 minutes: run a quick check of your answers, starting with question numbers and sections.
Parents, keep the drive logistical: Admit card? Pens? We will be at the gate when you come out. Save talk about the paper for the evening.
One paper is not the whole result. Under CBSE's Two Board Examination Policy, Class 10 students who sat the 2026 exam could try to improve in up to three subjects at a second exam in May 2026, according to CBSE's April 2026 notice. Here is how CBSE's two Class 10 board exams work.
If nerves get heavy, CBSE ran free counselling for board students from January to June 2026, including a 24x7 toll-free recorded guidance line, 1800-11-8004. The government's Tele MANAS helpline, 14416, is toll-free and open 24x7.
Do the trial trip to your centre this term, and the first morning holds one less surprise.
