For decades, enrolling in two degree programmes simultaneously was not permitted in India. If you wanted a B.Sc. in Physics and a B.A. in History, you had to finish one before starting the other.
This changed when the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued new guidelines on April 13, 2022, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The framework now allows students to legally pursue two degrees or diplomas at the same time, expanding the ways you can build a career.
Here is exactly how the rules work, how to manage the workload, and what the research says about the realities of a dual degree.
Can I do two degrees at the same time in India?
Yes. Under the new rules, you are allowed to enroll in two degree or diploma programmes at the same time, provided you follow the specific combinations laid out by the UGC.
These guidelines apply to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and diplomas across India. However, they do not apply to Ph.D. programmes, which still demand exclusive, full-time focus.
What are the UGC guidelines for dual degrees?
The UGC has laid out three clear pathways for pursuing two academic programmes at the same time. The core requirement is that class schedules must not clash.
Two physical programmes: You can enroll in two full-time physical (offline) programmes, provided that the class timings for one programme do not overlap with the class timings of the other.
Physical and online: You can pursue one programme in full-time physical mode and a second programme in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or online mode.
Two online programmes: You can pursue up to two ODL or online programmes simultaneously.
The online or ODL programmes you choose must be from higher education institutions officially recognised by the UGC and the Government of India.
In November 2024, the UGC also clarified that universities cannot deny admission to a second programme just because you cannot produce a migration or school-leaving certificate. Since your primary institution holds the original, insisting on it would defeat the purpose of the dual-degree policy.
Does doing two degrees affect your grades and stress?
Taking on two degrees sounds efficient, but the cognitive load is heavy. Research published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health looked closely at double-degree students.
The study found a strong activation of the sympathetic nervous system (your "fight or flight" stress response) during major academic events like thesis defences. Because of the increased burden of studying for two degrees, these students obtained lower mean grades and lower grades in their thesis compared to single-degree students.
However, there is a silver lining. The same study noted that double-degree students demonstrated higher levels of habituation and adaptability to stressful events. Over time, they recovered their resting "rest-and-digest" state faster than their single-degree peers.
How can you manage the workload of two programmes?
If you decide to pursue two degrees, standard study habits will not be enough. You need to exploit overlaps and study more strategically.
Look for knowledge arbitrage: Look at the syllabi for both degrees and identify overlapping modules or concepts. If you are taking a statistics course for economics and a data analysis module for computer science, study the core mathematics once and apply it to both.
Use interleaved practice: Instead of blocking out entire weeks for one degree and ignoring the other, mix your problem sets. If you need a schedule for this, you can follow a structured interleaved practice plan to ensure both subjects stay fresh in your memory.
Lean on AI to get unstuck: When you are managing heavy credit loads, you do not have time to sit staring at a blank page. If you hit a wall while doing homework, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session, so you sit down to a clear next step. If you need to quickly review a concept for a test, you can use a 4-step concept revision plan and look up the fundamentals in the Concept Library.
Master the Maker's schedule: Dedicate specific half-days entirely to "deep work" without switching contexts. Use your lower-energy hours to watch pre-recorded online lectures or complete routine readings.
Pursuing two degrees is an exercise in intense time management, but with the legal backing of the UGC and a strategic approach to learning, it is entirely achievable.
