Downloading your admit card is supposed to be the final administrative step before an exam. You enter your application number, wait for the PDF to load, and expect to see your details ready for print. Finding someone else's photograph, a blurred image, or a blank space where your signature should be can send a student into a panic.
When an admit card error breaks your routine, it is hard to know where to start studying again. Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session, so you sit down to a clear next step. In the meantime, here is how to handle the administrative problem so you can get back to your books and maintain a study routine that lasts.
Why do admit card mismatches happen?
Errors on an admit card usually stem from data processing glitches or formatting issues when your image was uploaded. During the application period, a platform might compress an image too aggressively, causing a signature to disappear, or two profiles might get crossed during document generation. These are known technical issues, and exam boards are prepared to resolve them.
Can you edit an admit card yourself?
The most important rule is not to alter the digital file or the printout. Using photo-editing software to paste your correct photograph over a wrong one, or signing an unsigned card with a pen, is considered an unfair practice. Exam invigilators match the admit card against the data provided by the exam body; an altered card will fail this check and may lead to disqualification. You must treat the downloaded document as an official record, even when it is wrong.
Who should you contact immediately?
Your first step is to report the error to the official exam body. Do not wait to see if a new card is generated automatically.
For NEET and JEE Main, the National Testing Agency (NTA) handles corrections. You must call their helpdesk at 011-40759000 or email them at their official address. According to the official NTA NEET guidelines, if a mismatch is reported, candidates are usually permitted to sit for the examination with the downloaded card while the agency corrects the central record. When you email the NTA, clearly state your application number, name, and the exact nature of the error in the subject line. Attach a copy of the flawed admit card and a copy of your original confirmation page.
For CBSE board exams, regular students cannot request changes directly. You must show the admit card to your school principal immediately. The school will verify your details against their records and use the CBSE portal to request a correction from the regional office. Private candidates should contact their CBSE Regional Office directly, bringing their original application proof in person.
What should you carry on exam day?
If the board cannot issue a revised admit card before the exam date, you will still need to prove your identity at the centre. Pack these in a clear folder the night before:
The flawed admit card: Print it exactly as downloaded, without any handwritten notes or pasted photos. Do not attempt to fix it yourself.
Extra photographs: Carry extra passport-size photographs identical to the one you uploaded during the application process. The invigilator will likely paste one onto an attendance sheet.
Valid photo ID: Bring an original, government-issued photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, PAN card, or passport. Your school ID card is also necessary if you are writing a board exam.
Your application printout: Carry the confirmation page generated when you applied, as this proves what you originally submitted.
Proof of contact: Print the email you sent to the board reporting the error, or the grievance ticket number if you submitted a query through an online portal.
At the exam centre, the invigilators may ask you to sign a formal undertaking stating your true identity. They will cross-check your extra photographs and valid ID against the application form. Handing over this complete set of documents will help clear you to sit for the test quickly, allowing you to focus on the paper ahead without adding unnecessary pressure.
