Every year, once Class 10 results are out, some ICSE families ask whether to move to a CBSE school for Class 11, often for JEE or NEET plans or a subject combination the current school lacks. Here is what the official documents say actually changes, and a plan for the first six weeks.
Should my child switch from ICSE to CBSE after Class 10?
Switch for a specific reason, not because one board is said to be easier. CBSE's 2026-27 Class 11 physics syllabus sets a 3-hour, 70-mark theory paper whose ten units are grouped into blocks worth 23, 17, 20 and 10 marks. A copy of CISCE's revised ISC physics syllabus gives Class 11 theory the same 70 marks, split 23, 17, 20 and 10 over ten closely matching units, from measurement to oscillations and waves.
Good reasons to switch:
The new school offers the subject combination your child wants.
The teaching, timetable or travel time is clearly better, and your child wants the move.
A weak reason is "everyone says CBSE is better for entrance exams". Entrance syllabi come from the exam bodies, so compare the current official syllabus with the new school's chapter list yourself.
Timing matters. CBSE's admission bye-laws do not allow direct admission to Class 12 from another board except when parents are transferred or the family moves, and admission in Class 9 and above after 31 August needs prior permission. Class 11 is the realistic window. Going the other way, the ISC regulations say CISCE decides eligibility for students from other boards, who need pass marks in English and four other subjects.
What actually changes in subjects and marking?
Textbooks. The CBSE physics syllabus lists the NCERT Class 11 Physics Parts I and II and the NCERT lab manual as prescribed books, and says content NCERT marks as excluded for 2026-27 is not to be tested.
English. CBSE's scheme of studies requires Hindi or English as one of the two languages, so a student can take one language and four electives. The ISC regulations make English compulsory, alongside four or five electives.
Pass marks. On CBSE's Class 11 grading scale, 33-40 marks earn a D and 32 and below is "Essential Repeat". Under the ISC regulations, promotion to Class 12 needs at least 35% in five subjects including English, plus 75% attendance.
Who sets the paper. On both boards the Class 11 final exam is conducted by the school. CBSE says it should be similar to its Class 12 board exam.
Internal marks. In CBSE, maths is 80 theory and 20 internal assessment; physics, chemistry and biology are 70 theory and 30 practical.
Where do the 30 physics practical marks go?
The theory paper looks the same. The lab does not. In CBSE Class 11 physics, the 30 practical marks are two experiments (7 + 7), a practical record (5), one activity (3), an investigatory project (3) and a viva (5). In ISC Class 11 physics, they are a practical exam (15), project work (10) and a practical file (5).
So shift effort from the project to lab skill: reading a Vernier calliper and screw gauge, writing up each experiment the same day, and practising viva questions on least count and sources of error.
How can you help your child adjust in the first six weeks?
Week 1: Get the new school's syllabus, the list of practicals and the NCERT books. Ask the physics teacher which experiments are done in term 1.
Weeks 1-2: Have your child try the end-of-chapter questions of the first two NCERT chapters in each science and mark anything unfamiliar. For a gap, the Fermi Concept Library has every concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, each with its own lesson.
Weeks 2-3: Read NCERT closely, including in-text examples. CBSE's curriculum document says its board papers will have more questions based on real-life situations that ask students to apply and analyse.
Weeks 3-4: Set up the practical record and a one-page viva sheet per experiment.
Weeks 5-6: After the first unit test, sort lost marks into "did not know", "wrong method" and "careless". For wrong-method errors, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning.

What should you say to your child?
"You are not starting again. Most physics chapters match. What's new is the book, the lab marks and the people, so let's work on those, not redo Class 10."
