The bag is packed, and then the tears start at the gate. If this happens every morning, you are not doing anything wrong. Paediatrician Wendy Sue Swanson, writing on the American Academy of Pediatrics' parenting site, says that "it's rare that separation anxiety persists on a daily basis after the preschool years".
Schools expect the start to take time too. NCERT's Vidya Pravesh is a three-month play-based school preparation module for Grade 1, which states such as Assam have adapted. Settling in is planned over a term, not a morning.
Why does my child cry every morning at drop-off?
A 2009 article in Pediatric Annals puts it plainly: "separation anxiety is a normal developmental phenomenon among preschoolers". The moment of parting is usually the hardest part. Dr Mery Taylor, a psychologist at CHOC, a children's hospital in California, notes that crying on the first day of preschool is normal and usually subsides once the child becomes engaged in the new environment.
This is why a long goodbye backfires. Swanson's advice is to keep it short: "If you linger, the transition time does too."
What is a good goodbye routine for school?
Pick one routine and do it the same way every day. This plan draws on advice from the AAP, the NHS and CHOC.
The night before, tell your child what tomorrow looks like: who takes them, what they will do, and who picks them up.
Choose a goodbye ritual you can finish in under a minute, such as two hugs and a high five, or the same words each time.
Say when you will be back in their kind of time: "after lunch" or "after story time", not "at 1.30".
Hand your child to a named adult, say goodbye and leave while they can see you, rather than slipping away.
Smile and wave as if you are sure, even if you feel wobbly. The NHS notes that children pick up on your tension.
Do not come back to check. Coming back starts the goodbye all over again.
What should I tell the teacher?
Two minutes of information helps the teacher help your child. Tell them:
what usually calms your child (a song, a job to do, a favourite corner)
the name your child answers to at home, and words in your home language for water, toilet and hungry
any recent change: a new sibling, a move, an illness, a parent travelling
exactly what your goodbye routine is, so the teacher can be ready at the right moment
Then ask one question: how long did the crying last after I left? That answer tells you more than what you saw at the gate. For later conversations, these parent-teacher meeting questions help turn a chat into a plan.
How long does settling in usually take?
There is no fixed number, but the NHS gives a useful marker: get advice if the anxiety is very distressing, your child stays upset long after you leave, or it has been going on for more than a few weeks.
To see the trend, keep a short log for each school day:
Did they cry at the gate? (yes, a little, no)
What did the teacher say about how quickly they settled?
How was the evening: talking about school, or worried about tomorrow?
The aim is not zero tears but shorter goodbyes and quicker settling over a few weeks. If the log shows things getting worse, look more closely.
When is crying at drop-off a sign to look closer?
Separation anxiety disorder is different from ordinary drop-off tears. According to Texas Children's Hospital, the worry must last at least 4 weeks and get in the way of school, friendships or home life. The Pediatric Annals article estimates that 3.2% to 4.1% of children have it. Talk to your paediatrician or the school counsellor if you notice:
crying that has not eased after a few weeks, or keeps getting worse
vomiting, refusing to eat, or being inconsolable for an hour (CHOC)
avoiding school, frequent stomach aches or headaches, or nightmares about being apart (Texas Children's)
an older child who was fine and has suddenly started dreading school, which can point to a problem with friends, a teacher or the work
Tele MANAS, the government's tele mental health helpline, is free and open 24x7 on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416, according to the Press Information Bureau. For teenagers, our guide to exam stress and when to get help covers the signs that need a professional.
If an older child's dread comes down to one subject where they feel lost, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what they already know and build a plan for the session. Keep pressure low at home too; these ideas on helping children learn without adding pressure are a good place to start.
For most families, tomorrow's step is simple: one short ritual, one clear handover, and a walk away with a smile.
