Many Class 12 students preparing for JEE Main or NEET-UG reach the same point: Class 12 chapters are moving fast in school, and a whole year of Class 11 is half-forgotten. Rereading every Class 11 book feels responsible, but it is slow and hides what you have forgotten. A better plan is to test first, then study only what the test shows.
Why not just reread your Class 11 notes?
Because rereading feels like more learning than it is. In a 2006 experiment by Roediger and Karpicke, students either restudied prose passages or took recall tests on them. Restudying won on a test 5 minutes later, but on tests 2 days or 1 week later the tested students remembered substantially more, even though restudying had made students more confident.
A 2013 review of 10 learning techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed (spaced) practice as high utility, and rated rereading and highlighting as low utility.
So the quiz comes first: it shows what to fix, and taking it is already practice.
How do you decide which Class 11 chapters to revise first?
First check the current official syllabus on the NTA website, so you skip anything that no longer counts. Then score every Class 11 chapter on two things, each from 1 to 3.
Weight: tally questions per chapter across a few recent past papers. 3 means it appears in most papers; 1 means it is rare.
Weakness: your score on the 10-question diagnostic below. 3 means 4 or fewer right; 2 means 5 to 7; 1 means 8 or more.
Multiply the two. A priority of 6 or 9 means revise now. 3 or 4 means the second pass. 1 or 2 means keep it alive with a short quiz every few weeks.
For example, say you are a JEE aspirant and these are your scores (the numbers are illustrative, not exam data):
Rotational motion: weight 3, weakness 3 (4 of 10 on the diagnostic). Priority 9: this week.
Chemical equilibrium: weight 3, weakness 2 (6 of 10). Priority 6: next week.
Thermodynamics: weight 3, weakness 1 (9 of 10). Priority 3: second pass.
Units and measurements: weight 1, weakness 2. Priority 2: a quick quiz later.
How can AI run a quick Class 11 diagnostic?
Ask a chatbot or AI tutor to quiz you, not to teach you, one chapter at a time. You can paste this script:
"Quiz me on the Class 11 chapter [name] for [JEE Main or NEET-UG]. Ask 10 questions one at a time: 4 on concepts, 4 standard numericals or factual questions, 2 harder ones. Don't show any answer until I reply. After each reply, tell me if I was right and which idea the question tested. At the end, list the ideas I got wrong."
Keep the score honest: close the book, work on paper, and count every guess as wrong. AI can make mistakes in maths and physics, so check any marking you doubt against NCERT or a worked solution. Our guide to making an AI chatbot quiz you properly has more prompts.
If you would rather not build the quiz yourself, Fermi's AI tutor works out what you already know and builds a plan for the session, so you start from your gaps rather than from page one.
What does targeted practice look like after the diagnostic?
Sort every wrong answer into one of three bins. Each bin gets a different fix.
Forgot a fact or formula: write 5 to 10 recall questions and space them out over the coming weeks.
Didn't understand the idea: relearn that one concept, explain it aloud in your own words, then try 3 fresh questions. The Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.
Chose the wrong method: solve 5 to 8 problems of that type, mixed in with other types, and compare your method step by step. The Fermi Problem Library has a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.
How does this fit beside Class 12 work?
A weekly rhythm to keep alongside school:
Sunday: two chapter diagnostics, then update your priority list.
Monday to Friday: 40 to 45 minutes a day on the top chapter, after your Class 12 work.
Saturday: a mixed set of questions from every chapter you revised in earlier weeks.
Every two to three weeks: re-quiz fixed chapters with new questions. Score 8 of 10 or more and its weakness drops to 1.
To decide when each chapter comes back, use our 4-week spaced revision schedule. Once full mock tests begin, feed their errors back into your weakness scores with a 60-minute mock test review routine.
Parents can help by asking to see the priority list each Sunday rather than counting hours. If the backlog starts to feel overwhelming, talk to a teacher or someone you trust, or call the government's Tele MANAS helpline on 14416.
Start tonight with one chapter, ten questions and a pen.
