Vector algebra rewards students who know what each product means geometrically. If you only know the formulas, a single sign slip in a determinant can cost the whole question. This guide works every product on the same three vectors, shows a check for each answer, and lists the slips to watch for.
What does each exam include?
The CBSE Mathematics 2026-27 curriculum covers vectors in Class XII: types of vectors, components, section formula, and the "definition, geometrical interpretation, properties and application" of the dot and cross products. The JEE (Main) 2026 syllabus lists "scalar and vector products". The JEE (Advanced) 2026 brochure goes further: "scalar and vector triple products, and their geometrical interpretations". The NCERT Class 12 Vector Algebra chapter is the base text. Check your exam year's documents for changes.
We use these three vectors throughout:
a = i + 2j + 3k
b = 2i − j + k
c = i + j + k
What does the dot product tell you?
a · b = (1)(2) + (2)(−1) + (3)(1) = 2 − 2 + 3 = 3.
The dot product is a scalar. It equals |a||b| cos θ, so it tells you the angle.
|a| = √(1 + 4 + 9) = √14 and |b| = √(4 + 1 + 1) = √6.
cos θ = 3 ÷ √84 ≈ 0.327, so θ ≈ 70.9°.
The projection of a on b is (a · b) ÷ |b| = 3 ÷ √6 ≈ 1.22.
Two quick facts: a · b = 0 means the vectors are perpendicular (if neither is zero), and a negative dot product means the angle is more than 90°.
How do you find the cross product without sign errors?
Write the determinant with i, j, k in the top row:
a × b = i[(2)(1) − (3)(−1)] − j[(1)(1) − (3)(2)] + k[(1)(−1) − (2)(2)] = i(2 + 3) − j(1 − 6) + k(−1 − 4) = 5i + 5j − 5k.
Check 1: perpendicular to both. (5)(1) + (5)(2) + (−5)(3) = 5 + 10 − 15 = 0. And (5)(2) + (5)(−1) + (−5)(1) = 10 − 5 − 5 = 0. Both zero.
Check 2: magnitude. |a × b|² should equal |a|²|b|² − (a · b)² = 14 × 6 − 9 = 75. Direct: 25 + 25 + 25 = 75. It matches, so |a × b| = 5√3.
So the parallelogram with sides a and b has area 5√3 ≈ 8.66, and the triangle has half that, 5√3 ÷ 2. NCERT gives both area results. A unit vector perpendicular to both a and b is ±(i + j − k) ÷ √3.
What does the scalar triple product measure?
[a b c] = a · (b × c), and it equals the determinant of the three vectors' components:
Take the determinant with rows (1, 2, 3), (2, −1, 1) and (1, 1, 1):
1[(−1)(1) − (1)(1)] − 2[(2)(1) − (1)(1)] + 3[(2)(1) − (−1)(1)] = 1(−2) − 2(1) + 3(3) = −2 − 2 + 9 = 5.
Its absolute value is the volume of the parallelepiped with edges a, b and c, so the volume is 5. As a check, compute c · (a × b) = (1)(5) + (1)(5) + (1)(−5) = 5. Cyclic order gives the same value.
Coplanarity test. Three vectors are coplanar when [a b c] = 0. For which λ are a, b and i + j + λk coplanar?
Determinant = 1(−λ − 1) − 2(2λ − 1) + 3(2 + 1) = −λ − 1 − 4λ + 2 + 9 = 10 − 5λ. Setting it to zero gives λ = 2. (Putting λ = 1 gives 5, matching the value above.)
Check: with λ = 2, the third vector is (3/5)a + (1/5)b. First component: 3/5 + 2/5 = 1. Second: 6/5 − 1/5 = 1. Third: 9/5 + 1/5 = 2. It lies in the plane of a and b.
How do you expand the vector triple product?
a × (b × c) = (a · c)b − (a · b)c.
Here a · c = 6 and a · b = 3, so a × (b × c) = 6(2, −1, 1) − 3(1, 1, 1) = (9, −9, 3).
Check by direct calculation: b × c = (−2, −1, 3), and a × (−2, −1, 3) = (9, −9, 3). It matches. The result lies in the plane of b and c, as the formula says it must.
What are the common mistakes?
Treating a × b and b × a as equal. They are negatives of each other. NCERT states that the vector product is not commutative.
Moving brackets in a vector triple product. (a × b) × c is generally not equal to a × (b × c).
Forgetting the dot product is a number. "a · b = 3i" is meaningless.
Using i × i = 1. It is zero; i · i is 1.
Dropping the absolute value for volume. A triple product of −5 still means volume 5.
These errors are not just exam nerves. Nguyen and Meltzer (2003) gave a seven-item vector quiz to 2031 physics students at Iowa State and found that more than a quarter of students starting the second semester of calculus-based physics could not carry out two-dimensional vector addition. The basics need deliberate practice. Our post on vector errors in JEE physics covers the physics side.
A practice routine for one week
Day 1: Five dot products with angles and projections. Check each sign against your sketch.
Day 2: Five cross products, each followed by both checks above.
Day 3: Areas of triangles from three points, using half of |AB × AC|.
Day 5: Triple products and coplanarity, then five mixed questions. JEE Advanced aspirants should add vector triple product expansions.
Vectors lead straight into lines and planes, covered in our 3D geometry guide. If you find it hard to picture why a × b is perpendicular to both vectors, the Fermi Simulation Lab has interactive simulations for ideas that are easier to see than read.
Today, pick two vectors from your textbook, find their cross product and run both checks before you look at the answer.
