Students often treat NTA's mock tests as a free score predictor. NTA itself describes them differently, and using them for the wrong job wastes a practice slot. This post covers what NTA offers, how JEE Main and NEET differ here, what the research says about practice tests, and a plan for a mock day with a worked score.
What does NTA actually offer?
Mock tests on nta.ac.in/Quiz. The page lists exams including JEE-Main, NEET and AISSEE, and says the mock test is "to familiarize the students about processes of Computer Based Test (CBT)", adding: "These are only for practice purposes."
National Test Abhyas. NTA's Abhyas page describes an app with mock tests for engineering and medical streams.
Test Practice Centres. NTA's note on Test Practice Centres describes free centres, especially for remote and rural areas, where students practise on a computer node. The NTA home page still links to TPC registration; check whether a centre near you is open.
Past papers. The JEE Main website has a Question Papers section with shift-wise 2026 papers, such as the 2 April 2026 Shift 1 paper.
The JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin also says, in its appendix on the computer-based test, that a sample or mock test is available on the NTA website for hands-on practice.
Why is NEET different?
JEE Main Paper 1 is a computer-based test. NEET is not: the NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin says it was held in pen and paper mode in a single shift, with 180 questions in 3 hours. For a NEET student, an on-screen mock teaches a screen you will not see. Timed practice on paper with an OMR-style sheet matches the exam better. Check the current year's bulletin, since the mode is set each cycle.
What does research say about practice tests?
In a well-known study, Roediger and Karpicke (2006) had students either restudy prose passages or take recall tests on them. After five minutes, restudying did slightly better. On tests two days and one week later, the students who had been tested remembered substantially more, even though the restudy group felt more confident. A meta-analysis by Adesope, Trevisan and Sundararajan (2017) found practice tests more beneficial for learning than restudying and other comparison conditions.
The lesson for mocks: the test helps, but the review afterwards is where you find what to fix.
Worked example: a mock day plan and score
JEE Main Paper 1 has 75 questions in 180 minutes, scored +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one in both sections. That is 180 ÷ 75 = 2.4 minutes per question on average.
A simple plan with checkpoints:
0 to 60 minutes: first subject, first pass, answer what you are sure of.
60 to 120 minutes: second subject.
120 to 165 minutes: third subject.
165 to 180 minutes: return to questions you marked.
Sample result (made-up numbers): 52 attempted, 41 correct, 11 wrong. Score = 41 × 4 − 11 × 1 = 164 − 11 = 153 out of 300. Accuracy is 41 ÷ 52, about 79%. Those 11 wrong answers cost 11 marks directly, and also the 44 marks they would have earned if right, so the review should start with them. Our post on how to analyse a mock test has a full review routine.
Which mistakes waste mocks?
Taking a mock and skipping the review.
Reading NTA's mock as a score forecast. NTA calls it practice.
Learning the screen on exam day. Do one interface mock early; our guide to the JEE Main computer-based test screen explains each button.
NEET students practising only on screen.
Taking mocks back to back without time to fix anything between them.
A weekly routine
Once, early: one NTA interface mock to learn the layout.
Weekly: one full timed paper, ideally a past NTA paper, at the same time of day as your exam slot.
Next day: a review of every wrong and skipped question, sorted by cause.
Through the week: practise the question types that went wrong. For method errors, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning, so you can see where your approach went off track.
Book a three-hour slot this weekend, download one 2026 JEE Main paper from the NTA site, and sit it with a timer.
