Your JEE Main rank can also lead to a commission in the Indian Navy, with an engineering degree paid for by the Navy. The 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry Scheme uses JEE Main as its first filter. This post goes through the official notice for the course starting in January 2027, step by step, so you can see what each stage asks and what to check for your own year.
What is the 10+2 B.Tech Cadet Entry?
According to the Indian Navy's advertisement for the January 2027 course, selected candidates become Permanent Commissioned Officers in technical branches "after undergoing four year B Tech course at the prestigious Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala". Both unmarried men and women may apply. The course offered Mechanical Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering, and seven candidates from Mechanical are later streamed to Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding at NCW, Kochi. The degree is awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the notice says "the entire cost of training, including books and reading material, will be borne by the Indian Navy".
Who could apply for the January 2027 course?
The notice set these conditions:
Age: born between 02 Jul 2007 and 01 Jan 2010, both dates inclusive.
Education: passed Class 12 or equivalent with at least 70% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and at least 50% in English in either Class 10 or Class 12.
JEE: appeared in JEE (Main) 2026 for B.E./B.Tech.
Marital status: unmarried.
It listed 30 vacancies in each of the two branches, with a maximum of eight for women, and noted that vacancies are tentative.
Worked example: does this student meet the marks rule?
A student has Physics 68, Chemistry 72 and Mathematics 74 in Class 12, English 48 in Class 12 and English 65 in Class 10.
PCM total = 68 + 72 + 74 = 214 out of 300.
PCM aggregate = 214 / 300 × 100 = 71.3%, above 70%.
English is 48 in Class 12, below 50, but 65 in Class 10. The notice accepts at least 50% "either in Class X or Class XII", so the condition is met.
Now take a student born on 15 Jan 2010. That is after 01 Jan 2010, so they were not eligible for the January 2027 course, whatever their marks.
How does selection work?
Online application on joinindiannavy.gov.in, with Class 10 and 12 marksheets, a JEE (Main) 2026 scorecard showing the Common Rank List (CRL) rank, and a photo. For the January 2027 course the window opened on 29 May 2026; the Navy's news item records that it was extended up to 29 June 2026.
Shortlisting by CRL. Naval Headquarters fixes a cut-off on the JEE (Main) All India Common Rank List. There is no separate written test in the notice.
SSB interview for shortlisted candidates, at Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam, from September 2026 for this course. The Navy's SSB instructions page lists what to bring, including original certificates and photographs.
Medical examination for those recommended by the SSB. The notice says there is no relaxation in medical standards.
Merit list based on SSB marks and medical fitness, subject to vacancies and verification.
How is this different from NDA?
NDA has its own written examination conducted by UPSC, as the UPSC NDA and NA (II) 2026 notice sets out, while this entry uses your JEE Main rank in place of a written test and leads to a B.Tech in a technical branch. Our post on the NDA exam for science students covers the other route, and the Army Technical Entry Scheme is the Army's counterpart.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming any JEE score works. The Navy sets its own CRL cut-off for SSB calls, so a better rank improves your chances.
Checking only overall Class 12 percentage. The rule is 70% in PCM aggregate, a different number.
Missing the age window, which is set separately for each course.
Giving an email or phone you might change. The notice asks candidates not to change them until selection is over, since call-ups come that way.
What should you do now?
If you are in Class 11 or 12, keep PCM above 70% as a target in its own right, and treat JEE Main as the gateway. The January 2027 notice opened in late May 2026; the next one may open at a different time, so check the official site regularly.
