ISC biology rewards students who can draw and explain, not only list. The syllabus says all structures are to be taught with diagrams, the practical gives you three minutes per spot, and the theory paper mixes recall with short calculations. This post sets out how CISCE structures ISC 2027 biology, how the specimen theory paper is set, what the practical tests, and one worked problem of the kind that appears in Section A.
How are ISC 2027 biology marks divided?
The CISCE ISC 2027 Biology syllabus gives Class XII:
Paper I, Theory: 3 hours, 70 marks.
Paper II, Practical: 3 hours, 15 marks.
Project Work: 10 marks.
Practical File: 5 marks.
The theory weightage by unit is Reproduction 16, Genetics and Evolution 15, Biology and Human Welfare 14, Biotechnology and its Applications 10, and Ecology and Environment 15. Check: 16 + 15 + 14 + 10 + 15 = 70. The syllabus also lists 35 scientists with their contributions and 34 abbreviations to study, from ADA to VNTRs. CISCE issues a syllabus for each examination year, so check yours.
How is the ISC 2027 specimen theory paper set?
The ISC 2027 Biology specimen paper gives three hours plus 15 minutes of reading time, with all questions compulsory:
Section A: 20 marks of one-mark items.
Section B: seven questions of 2 marks.
Section C: seven questions of 3 marks.
Section D: three questions of 5 marks.
That is 20 + 14 + 21 + 15 = 70. Internal choices appear in two questions each in Sections B, C and D. Diagrams are to be drawn in pencil. Parts are tagged with the skill they test, from Recall to Create. Section A draws directly on the syllabus lists: one item asks you to expand KVIC, another to name the scientists who purified penicillin, Ernest Chain and Howard Florey.
What does the practical examination test?
The practical has four strands:
Taxonomy. Dissect a flower and write its floral formula and floral diagram. Seven families are listed, including Malvaceae, Solanaceae and Poaceae, and you are tested on any one.
Physiology experiments. Distribution of stomata, a comparison of two soils, enzyme action on starch at three temperatures and pH values, and isolating DNA from plant material.
Slide preparation. For example, pollen germination, a transverse section of an ovary showing placentation, and sections of hydrophyte and xerophyte material.
Spotting. Three minutes per spot to identify it, draw a labelled diagram and write at least two identifying features, on a separate answer sheet.
The project and the practical file are assessed by a Visiting Examiner. CISCE prefers handwritten, original investigatory projects and allows no plagiarism. Each practical must be recorded date-wise in the file and signed and dated by your teacher.
Worked example: DNA base ratios
The specimen asks: in a single strand of DNA, (A + T) : (G + C) = 0.3 : 1. What is (A + G) : (T + C) for the whole double-stranded molecule?
In double-stranded DNA, adenine pairs with thymine and guanine with cytosine, so the total A equals total T and total G equals total C.
So A + G = T + C, and the ratio is 1 : 1, whatever the single-strand ratio was. The answer key gives (a) 1 : 1.
A numerical version: a double-stranded DNA segment has 1,000 base pairs and 20% adenine.
1,000 base pairs means 2,000 nucleotides.
A = 20% of 2,000 = 400, so T = 400.
G + C = 2,000 − 800 = 1,200, so G = C = 600, which is 30% each.
Common mistakes: treating base pairs as nucleotides, which halves every count; and assuming A + T must equal G + C. Only A = T and G = C are required. Our profile of Erwin Chargaff tells how base counts pointed to DNA pairing. Section A also includes quick arithmetic, such as a population of 150 per square kilometre over 250 square kilometres: 150 × 250 = 37,500.
A practice routine for the term
Daily: one labelled diagram from the Reproduction unit, which carries the most marks.
Weekly: five scientists and five abbreviations from the syllabus lists, tested from memory.
Weekly: one Section C and one Section D question, answered to the mark value.
Fortnightly: one floral formula and diagram from a real flower, and a timed set of three spots.
For one of the slide preparations, see our post on the pollen germination practical. If a process like double fertilisation or the lac operon is hard to follow from text, the Fermi Concept Library covers every concept in biology with its own lesson.
Tonight, write out the 35 scientists list from memory and mark the ones you missed.
